In July 2026 a difference in the Terms of use of the US and EU Version was noticed, that guarantees that EU Accounts will be deleted after 36/42 Months of inactivity taking all the purchases you made with it and not being restored.

This means that purchases you have made are going to be deleted in the UK/EU after 36 Months of inactivity + 6 month wait time after PlayStation sends a notification to the account Email. After the user takes no action, the account will be deleted.

As of now there is no official confirmation from PlayStation/Sony themselves, but it is assumed that this has to do with EU and UK GDPR / Privacy legislation.
====Update: December 2019====
It seems like this was increased to 36 Months with these TOS udpates.
Account closure is irreversible.
EU (Germany): https://www.playstation.com/content/dam/global_pdc/en/corporate/legal/tosua/december-2019/TOSUA%20-%20Final%20v10.0%20-%20DE_DE.pdf
24.

====Older Versions====
I was not Able to find older Versions. So while this change was noticed in April 2026, this was part of the TOS for longer. Since the UK and EU GDPR rules - assuming that they are the cause of this - were written into law in 2016 it is possible, that the 2017 changes were made in response to that, and did not exist in this way before.

====US comparison====
Note: The person writing this, is not a lawyer or legal expert, and relies solely the understanding of the text and logic.

Current: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/legal/terms-of-service/
We may indefinitely suspend or discontinue online access to content or data associated with your Account at any time, including for service deprecations, maintenance services, or upgrades, without notice or liability. We may also discontinue offering certain Content or features. For any Content that uses online servers, we make no commitment to continue to make those servers available. In addition, we reserve the right to delete player account data that we determine to have been dormant.
Note: There is no time limit noted here. But it is kept so vague that it might be longer or shorter, since there is not definition of "dormant".

On the other hand, in the EU and UK Versions there is the 36 months implied definition for dormant/inactive and adds the additional step of a notification after 36 months, after which a 6 month time to respond is allowed for.

In all regions mentioned there is no way to re-gain access to the account or purchases and no refunds will be issued.

==Consumer-impact summary==
The impact on users is very clear: Your purchases on this digital storefront are tied o the account, and will be lost - without refund -, cannot be downloaded or otherwise accessed with or without the original or new account.

This means that purchases you made can be effectively stolen from the user. This is also a continuation of PlayStation acting this way - taking away purchases - and a way to make users agree to the system of digital purchases, by using the word "purchase" for something you don't "own", but have a revocable licence of.
