==Consumer impact summary==
The implementation of RFID authentication in GE refrigerator water filters forces GE's customers to buy OEM filters at prices ranging from $50-55, in contrast to functionally equivalent generic alternatives that cost $13-20.<ref name="homedepot">{{cite web |title=GE Genuine RPWFE Refrigerator Water Filter |url=https://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-Genuine-RPWFE-Refrigerator-Water-Filter-for-GE-Appliances-RPWFE/205601633 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250815105120/https://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-Genuine-RPWFE-Refrigerator-Water-Filter-for-GE-Appliances-RPWFE/205601633 |archive-date=15 Aug 2025 |access-date=2025-01-13 |website=www.homedepot.com |publisher=The Home Depot |quote=Price: $53.34}}</ref><ref name="amazon-generic">{{cite web |title=RPWFE Water Filter Replacements |url=https://www.amazon.com/rpwfe-filter/s?k=rpwfe+filter |publisher=Amazon |access-date=2025-01-13 |quote=Generic filters range: $16.99-$25.99}}</ref> Over a refrigerator's typical 20-year lifespan, this authentication system can add $1,600-2,400 in filter replacement costs.<ref group="note">Calculation based on 6-month replacement cycle: 40 filters × $52.50 average OEM price = $2,100 over 20 years versus 40 filters × $16.50 average generic price = $660</ref> The system affects many different model lines including the CFE28, CWE23, GFE28, PFE28, PWE23, and GYE22 series, representing millions of installed units across North America.<ref name="service-manual">{{cite web |title=GE RPWFE Service Manual |url=https://documents.cdn.ifixit.com/MAAllZQBE5yTAywM.pdf |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250814112646/https://documents.cdn.ifixit.com/MAAllZQBE5yTAywM.pdf |archive-date=14 Aug 2025 |access-date=2025-01-13 |website=iFixit |publisher=GE Appliances via iFixit}}</ref>

== Workaround ==

=== XWFE filter system ===
For the XWFE filter cartridge, the DRM can be defeated very easily with no modifications. The system is enabled by an RFID tag under the plastic label. By peeling the RFID tag off a genuine filter or the bypass plug and sticking it to the sensor, the fridge will dispense water with any filter installed. The bypass plug is included with the fridge, but they are also available at no charge from GE support.

Removing the RFID tag requires a hairdryer. It is important to heat the label before removing, as the tag contains an anti-tamper device. If the label is not removed carefully, a small piece of the tag will tear off and render it useless. It is easy to avoid damaging it by heating the sticker first and working slowly. Once finished, simply stick the label to the sensor behind the water filter.

If the filter is to be used for lead in tap water, the filter should be certified by NSF (a U.S. government agency) to Standard 53 for Lead Reduction. "Independent certification" is unofficial and is not equivalent "tested and certified by NSF/NSF international."

==Incidents==
===Introduction of RPWFE filters with RFID authentication (''2017'')===
GE moved from open RPWF filters to RFID-protected RPWFE models, using a system based on U.S. Patent Application 20150101669. The new filters contained authentication chips that would disable water & ice dispensing if non-genuine filters were detected, rather than just displaying warning messages.<ref name="GE-RPWFE" />

===GE Filtergate website creation (''June 2020'')===
An anonymous consumer created the "GE Filtergate" website providing detailed RFID bypass instructions after becoming frustrated with the authentication system.<ref name="register">{{cite web |last=Claburn |first=Thomas |date=2020-06-13 |title=Someone got so fed up with GE fridge DRM – yes, fridge DRM – they made a whole website on how to bypass it |url=https://www.theregister.com/2020/06/13/ge_refrigerator_drm_keeps_turning/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250820031104/https://www.theregister.com/2020/06/13/ge_refrigerator_drm_keeps_turning/ |archive-date=20 Aug 2025 |access-date=2025-01-13 |website=The Register |publisher=The Register}}</ref> The website gained lots of media attention from outlets including The Register, Vice, & Slashdot, bringing widespread awareness to the issue.<ref name="vice1">{{cite web |last=Koebler |first=Jason |date=2020-06-12 |title=Hacker Bypasses GE's Ridiculous Refrigerator DRM |url=https://www.vice.com/en/article/hacker-bypasses-ges-ridiculous-refrigerator-drm/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250821165246/https://www.vice.com/en/article/hacker-bypasses-ges-ridiculous-refrigerator-drm/ |archive-date=21 Aug 2025 |access-date=2025-01-13 |website=Vice |publisher=Vice}}</ref><ref name="slashdot">{{cite web |first= |date=2020-06-12 |title=Hacker Bypasses GE's Ridiculous Refrigerator DRM |url=https://tech.slashdot.org/story/20/06/12/203228/hacker-bypasses-ges-ridiculous-refrigerator-drm |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250823051531/https://tech.slashdot.org/story/20/06/12/203228/hacker-bypasses-ges-ridiculous-refrigerator-drm |archive-date=23 Aug 2025 |access-date=2025-01-13 |website=Slashdot |publisher=Slashdot}}</ref>

===Media investigation and public backlash (''June 2020'')===
Many tech news outlets reported on GE's refrigerator DRM system following the Filtergate website launch. iFixit published an investigation titled ''"Welcome to DRM Water: GE's Incredibly Dumb Money Grab,"''<ref name="ifixit" /> while The Register reported that the system represented ''"felony contempt of business model."''<ref name="vice2">{{cite web |last=Bode |first=Karl |date=2020-01-23 |title=These Fridges Won't Dispense Filtered Water Unless You Pay Extra for 'Official' Filters With RFID Chips |url=https://www.vice.com/en/article/these-fridges-wont-dispense-filtered-water-unless-you-pay-extra-for-official-filters-with-rfid-chips/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250814022916/https://www.vice.com/en/article/these-fridges-wont-dispense-filtered-water-unless-you-pay-extra-for-official-filters-with-rfid-chips/ |archive-date=14 Aug 2025 |access-date=2025-01-13 |website=Vice |publisher=Vice |quote=Cory Doctorow: 'we have created a legal doctrine akin to felony contempt of business model'}}</ref> The coverage led to increased consumer awareness & discussion of workaround methods.<ref name="groovypost">{{cite web |last=Busch |first=Jack |date=May 2020 |title=How to Hack RWPFE Water Filters for Your GE Fridge |url=https://www.groovypost.com/howto/hack-rwpfe-water-filters-ge-fridge/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250816055150/https://www.groovypost.com/howto/hack-rwpfe-water-filters-ge-fridge/ |archive-date=16 Aug 2025 |access-date=2025-01-13 |website=GroovyPost |publisher=GroovyPost}}</ref>
===FTC enforcement actions on warranty tying (''2022'')===
The Federal Trade Commission settled cases against Weber, Harley-Davidson, & Westinghouse for warranty tying violations similar to those used by GE's filter authentication system.<ref name="ftc1">{{cite web |date=2022-06-23 |title=FTC Takes Action Against Harley-Davidson and Westinghouse for Illegally Restricting Customers' Right to Repair |url=https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/06/ftc-takes-action-against-harley-davidson-westinghouse-illegally-restricting-customers-right-repair-0 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250801074701/https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/06/ftc-takes-action-against-harley-davidson-westinghouse-illegally-restricting-customers-right-repair-0 |archive-date=1 Aug 2025 |access-date=2025-01-13 |website=Federal Trade Commission |publisher=Federal Trade Commission}}</ref><ref name="ftc2">{{cite web |date=2022-07-07 |title=FTC Takes Action Against Weber for Illegally Restricting Customers' Right to Repair |url=https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/07/ftc-takes-action-against-weber-illegally-restricting-customers-right-repair |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250814131556/https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/07/ftc-takes-action-against-weber-illegally-restricting-customers-right-repair |archive-date=14 Aug 2025 |access-date=2025-01-13 |website=Federal Trade Commission |publisher=Federal Trade Commission}}</ref> While not directly targeting GE, these actions established precedent for challenging manufacturers who condition warranties on use of specific branded parts.
