I reached out to the company via Amazon and asked if all features are available without using the app and the response I received is:

"The app is not required to use your TK-02—you can enjoy brewing directly from the machine’s interface. • However, the app does provide extra convenience such as user-adjustable temperature settings and the ability to set the wake-up time. I hope that helps clarify things for you. If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask!"

While this doesn't qualify as an immediate "defect" as outlined in some of Louis' recent videos, it opens the door for Terra Kaffe to disable functionality in the future. They already offer a rental option for the machine, a subscription service for coffee, and firmware updates for the machine via your home's Wi-Fi. This allows Terra Kaffe to become the Futurehome of coffee down the road.
