==Background==

[[Microsoft]] discontinued support for Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) starting with the 24H2 release of Windows 11. All users who have installed this version or later can no longer use their devices. Microsoft had the drivers built into the operating system and removed them citing maintenance issues. Users who wish to continue using these devices must either use Windows 10 or block the 24H2 update from being installed.<ref name=":1" /> This affects device models from manufacturers including Samsung, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Dell, and Microsoft.

==Discontinuation of service==

UploadVR contacted Microsoft and a company representative provided the following official statement: "As of Nov 1, 2026 for consumers and Nov 1, 2027 for commercial customers, Windows Mixed Reality will no longer be available for download via the Mixed Reality portal app, Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR, and SteamVR Beta, and we will discontinue support. At that time, Windows Mixed Reality will no longer receive security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, technical support, or online technical content updates."<ref name=":0" /> Microsoft has since updated the official ''Windows Deprecated features for Windows client'' [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/deprecated-features article] with a more complete statement: "Windows Mixed Reality is deprecated and will be removed in Windows 11, version 24H2. These headsets are working on Linux distributions using the monado/opencomposite vr stack. [https://gitlab.com/gabmus/envision Envision] is an app that will compile and run the required apps to get everything working. More information can be found on the [https://lvra.gitlab.io/ LVRA website] and [https://discord.gg/EHAYe3tTYa discord]. As it is still alpha/beta software, there are still bugs, and depending on vr set, not all functionality may be implemented yet. However, as it is open source software, it is constantly being improved.

{{Stub}}Kernel Level Anti-Cheats is anti-cheat software that runs at the kernel level instead of the typical user level. These methods of anti-cheat have recently become more popular among big online service games. They are controversial because of privacy and security concerns.

==How it works==
Kernel level anti-cheats run at the kernel level, the deepest and most authoritative level of the computer. This software has access to everything the computer is doing. This is in contrast to traditional, user level anti-cheats, which only had access to user-level permissions and therefore could not detect certain cheat engines which were cleverly hidden.

As kernel level anti-cheats have access to everything that's going on in a computer, any party that hijacks said anti-cheat can snoop on the private daily lives of users.

Since Kernel Level anti-cheats operate at the kernel level, when they are eventually hijacked and exploited they create a massive security issue directly at the kernel level. == Purism 5 Refund Controversy ==
Purism started taking pre-orders of this phone on 24 August 2017. A customer bought a preorder in 2019, and after 3 years, on 3 August 2022, the customer wrote an email requesting a refund, stating "I would like to request a refund for my order #Purism_xxxx. I no longer wish to receive my Librem 5. Thank you."

Purism responded by saying "Okay, this is a PRE-order from 2019. ETA is Q4 2022/Q1/2023, once we reach it our shipping queue we will contact you. You can then reply with your refund request. Per out policy we can't cancel a pre-order until we reach it in the shipping queue."

This a tactic used by companies in hopes that the customer forgets about the refund request.

In Q2 2023(11 April 2023) The customer emailed Purism and they created a ticket saying "When it is being processed my colleagues from our financial department will contact you to confirm the details"

2 Months later on 14 June 2023, the customer reached out and asked for an update stating, "I requested a refund for my Librem 5 two months ago and it says here that a support ticket was created and I have not received any further correspondence since this email or a refund. I would like and update on the status of my refund"

At least 2 emails were sent asking for an update, with no response from Purism.

On 26 July 2023, Purism responded by saying that "I am sorry, the original policy was 'no refunds'. which is enforced now when we reached shipping parity." and "I'm afraid at the moment we can only offer you to have the phone shipped... Alternatively, we could provide a store credit for the amount you funded the phone with(and add up to 20% of the value), in case you are interested in purchasing something else from our store"

Purism used "weasel words" by saying "You can then reply with your refund REQUEST" and then months later stating "the original police was 'no refunds'", as requests do not have to be granted.

A former employee sent an email to Louis Rossmann after Louis released a youtube video documenting the refund controversy and security concerns. Louis declined to remove the video, and created another video responding to the email from the former employee.
