Consumer impact summary
Consumers had their information collected, then sold off to a third party company called Verisk, without the consent of their consumers, in which Verisk then resold the collected data as "driver reports," which insurance companies utilized to increase the premiums of their customers.
Honda American subsidiary company, American Honda Motor Co., Inc, operates the HondaLink apps on both Apple Store and Google Play Store, designed to connect Honda vehicles to smartphones for easy of use and connection of services.
Incidents
December 2010 - Customer Data Breach
In 2010, Honda reported that nearly "2.2 million customers" were affected by a data breach in the United States, including personal identifiable information (PII), such as "names, login names, e-mail addresses and 17-character Vehicle Identification Number".[1] This affected Honda luxury brand, Acura, with 2.7 million myAcura accounts, but that was limited to only emails per Honda.[1]
February 2011 - Honda Canada Customer Data Breach
The 2011 Honda Canada data breach exposed the personal information of 283,000 Honda and Acura owners across Canada.[2] The data, which was stored following a marketing campaign for customers to sign up to Honda myHonda and myAcura services.
The data breach exposed the following personal identifiable information (PII):[2][3][4]
- Names
- Addresses
- Vehicle identification numbers
Some cases, additional information was disclosed:
- Financing account numbers
- Telephone numbers
- Email address
October 2019 - Customer Data Breach
Honda exposed roughly 26,000 vehicle owner records containing personal identifiable information (PII) of North American customers after misconfiguring an Elasticsearch cluster.[5] This data breach specifically covered Honda North America, covering the process for new customer enrollment.[6]
The data breach exposed the following personal identifiable information (PII):[6]
- Full name
- Email address
- Phone number
- Mailing address
- Vehicle make and model
- Vehicle VIN number
- Agreement ID
- Other service information
July 2024
Senators Wyden and Markey's letter to the FTC accusing Honda of selling customer data to the third party company Verisk, who then resold the data in the form of "driver reports", which insurance companies used to increase customer's insurance premiums.[7]
March 2025 - Privacy Violations
Honda settled with the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) for privacy violations, for which they paid a $632,500 fine.[8]
March 5th 2026 - Removing of Existing Features from HondaLink
Honda announces that existing HondaLink features for specific cars models will be removed starting March 5th, 2026, including but not limited to: Vehicle Notifications - Warning lamps and Maintenance Minders, Vehicle Mileage, Fuel Level/Fuel Range, Oil Life, and Send Destination.[9]
May 21st 2026 - Defective Airbags
Honda announced a recall of nearly 100,000 vehicles due to potential air bag issues affecting several models and Honda's luxury and performance brand/division, Acura.[10][11]
