In 2022, with the release of the S22 phone line, Samsung released pre-installed software on their flagship phones, deemed the "Gaming Optimization Service" (GOS). Unbeknownst to the consumer, GOS deliberately throttled their phones under any load across 10,000+ different games and apps.

Background

Since 2010, Samsung has been releasing their flagship "S series" line to the public. They have always been a major competitor of Apple and have been champions of the Android operating system. The S22 marked their 12th rendition of the phone line, which aimed to be comparable to Apple's iPhone 14.

Incident

In 2022, briefly after Samsung released their S22 phone line to the public, Korean consumers were upset after they found out that their phones had software on them that limited the performance capability of their devices. Given as this was implemented unexpectedly by Samsung without the consent of the consumer, the citizens of South Korea rushed to file a class-action lawsuit against Samsung for this discovery.
