Perpetual license invalidation

TeamViewer has previously sold a "perpetual" license for software versions 8-12, which are now discontinued. The licensing model of TeamViewer products changed in the meantime, perpetual licenses are no longer supported, and instead new customers are sold a subscription model.[1] The customer response on the community forum focuses on the legal aspect of this conduct, and about organizing a class action lawsuit against TeamViewer because alleged violation of the perpetual license terms. TeamViewer proposes that users with existing perpetual licenses "upgrade" to the latest TeamViewer under a subscription plan.

Autorenewal of subscription (2021)

In 2021 a case was filed against TeamViewer, challenging the automatic renewal practice. The district court ruled that California's autorenewal law was not violated, which was upheld by the designated court of appeals in 2023.[2] Starting from July 2025 the Californian autorenewal law amendments will take effect, which add additional requirements like affirmative consent.[3]

Cancellation obstacles

In combination with autorenewal, Teamviewer requires members to submit a ticket to their support team in order to cancel their subscription, and this must be done at least 28 days before the renewal period[4].
