Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is a Japanese auto manufacturer. Honda produces well established models such as the Accord, Civic, and CR-V, and is most known for their practicality and reliability at a price the average car buyer can afford.

Consumer impact summary

Consumers had their information collected, then sold off to a third party company called Verisk, without the consent of their consumers, in which Verisk then resold the collected data as "driver reports," which insurance companies utilized to increase the premiums of their customers.

Honda American subsidiary company, American Honda Motor Co., Inc, operates the HondaLink apps on both Apple Store and Google Play Store, designed to connect Honda vehicles to smartphones for easy of use and connection of services.

Incidents

July 2024: Senators Wyden and Markey's letter to the FTC accusing Honda of selling customer data to the third party company Verisk, who then resold the data in the form of "driver reports", which insurance companies used to increase customer's insurance premiums.[1]

January 2025: Honda had a Memorandum of Understanding to merge with Nissan,[2] however Honda and Nissan was unable to make an agreement on the conditions of the merger, and the merger has since been canceled.

March 2025: Honda settled with the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) for privacy violations, for which they paid a $632,500 fine.[3]
