Apple Self Service Repair is a service offered by Apple that provides repair manuals, genuine Apple parts and tools for consumers to repair apple devices. [1] The service first became available in the United States in April 2022 [2], and expanded to additional countries throughout 2022. [3]

Consumer-impact summary
While the program empowers customers to repair their own devices, it falls short in several crucial areas.
User Freedom
While Apple’s self‑service repair program nominally expands repair options, it still limits which components can be serviced by end users. Certain parts remain unavailable, preserving a barrier to full DIY repair.
Certain parts cannot be purchased separately (e.g., keyboards can only be purchased with a top case). Leading to higher prices for the end user and waste.
Performing a repair outside Apple‑approved channels can also void warranty coverage, discouraging users from exercising the option.
User Privacy
Ordering parts through the Self Service Repair parts store requires the serial number of the device, undermining the privacy of the end customer by tying a repair request to a piece of personally identifiable hardware information.
Some parts require a mandatory "Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair" step after the repair.
Business Model
By selling parts, Apple moves part of its repair revenue from service center labor to component sales.
Market Control
Apple retains exclusive control over the distribution of genuine parts, limiting competition from independent refurbishers or third‑party manufacturers.
