User Privacy

During operation, Waymo vehicles take both interior and exterior videos. As of June 2025, Waymo has not disclosed whether or not it stores videos in the cloud, "how many cameras are inside its vehicles, exactly how long footage is retained, and whether the company has ever turned over footage to US federal law enforcement or a branch of the military." However, it is known that Waymo has given video evidence to law enforcement in the past, and that it currently uses user data and videos for improving their product.

Potential usage of interior camera data for Generative AI training (opt-out) (April 2025)

On April 5th, 2025, researcher Jane Manchun Wong shared an unreleased privacy policy page. The policy allows Waymo to "share data to improve and analyze its functionality and to tailor products, services, ads, and offers to your interests." The unreleased page includes options to opt out of using “interior camera data associated with rider’s identity” for GAI training. Waymo responded, claiming that they have "no plans" to use the data for targeted ads. As of August 2025, Waymo has not yet released this privacy policy page.
