Microsoft Copilot is a generative AI assistant developed by Microsoft AI. Built on OpenAI's GPT-4 and GPT-5 series of large language models and fine-tuned with Microsoft's proprietary Prometheus model, Copilot launched in 2023 as Microsoft's primary replacement for the discontinued Cortana virtual assistant. The service originally debuted in February 2023 under the name Bing Chat before Microsoft unified the Copilot branding across its product ecosystem later that year.

Copilot is available on Windows 10 and 11, macOS, iOS, Android, and through web browsers. On Windows, it can be launched from the taskbar, via the dedicated Copilot key introduced on new keyboards in January 2024, or through the voice command "Hey, Copilot." Additional features include Copilot Voice for real-time voice conversations powered by GPT-4o, and Copilot Vision, which can analyze on-screen content and provide guidance in real time.
Consumer Impact Summary
User Freedom
Due to the aggressive methods Microsoft has used to force consumers to use the product, Copilot has gained a mostly negative reputation amongst Windows and Microsoft products consumers.
User Privacy
Windows Recall, a Copilot-powered software, has raised a lot of privacy concerns because of its ability to take screenshots of extremely sensitive data, such as passwords or credit card information.
