Microsoft removes passwords from the Authenticator app
editThis is absolutely insane, and I am furious.
A minor update to the authenticator app (on my iphone) has removes years of stored passwords and usernames. Poof. the password functionality and all data is just gone. No notice, no warning, no ability to export. Nothing. .. And I am traveling on another continent, so basically I am even stranded as I have (or rather had) passwords for both hotels and them emails they are linked to in the Authenticator app.
The reason I chose it way back in 2016/2017 was that it is separate from the OS, and it would not disclose passwords to 3rd parties or leak them via autofill to impersonating websites. Not to mention probably 40% of the passwords I had there were not for websites at all.
I hope MS just removed the interface but kept the data in the DB. Otherwise it would be a rude, nasty, insane thing to do, and we can mount pressure on them to restore the functionality, or at least allow users to export the passwords. 87.227.196.136 23:25, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
