Health violations

On 9 August, an Sweetgreen restaurant located in 659 Boylston ST was found with 22 health violations that include several food containers not being labeled, improper temperature, inadequate facility cooling, broken food containers, employees not handwashing prior to handling gloves, lack of thermometers usage in salads, several insects and rodents, lack of food manager and call to action from said manager.[1][2] In response, Sweetgreen CEO and president Karen kelly released the following statement;[3]

"We have implemented a new structure and new role within our restaurant operations, the first of which is being deployed today at Black Bay. The team member in this role will focus specifically on food safety and best in class culinary practices."[3]

Around late June 2017, the restaurant location failed a health inspection for containing rodents and insects, lack of improper cleaning and/or damage to equipment, floor, and wall related surfaces.[4]

Around late August 2018, the restaurant was cited with 5 violations for food managers lack of knowledge, lack of health policy for employees and cleanup procedure for vomiting and diarrhea events, and employees not easily able to accessibility access hand sink.[5]

In a study conducted by non profit New Food Economy around 2019, it was found that Sweetgreen, along with other restaurant brands like Chipotle, were found to contain dangerous cancerous chemicals known as polyfluoroalkyl substance.[6][7][8] Around 2020, Sweetgreen silently changed its bowls across all locations.[9]
