Square Enix ending support for cloud versions of Kingdom Hearts on the Nintendo Switch

On June 9, 2027 Square Enix will discontinue support for "Cloud" versions of the Kingdom Hearts series on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. Players who bought any of these game collections lose access to what they purchased unless they buy the new, non-cloud versions of the game(s) on their preferred console.

Background

On February 10, 2022 Square Enix launched a collection of Kingdom Hearts games on the Nintendo Switch. These games were only playable via a cloud streaming service and this collection was the only option for players to purchase Kingdom Hearts on a Nintendo Switch.

On June 9, 2026 during a Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced that various collections of Kingdom Hearts games would be officially launching on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 family of systems. During the presentation, Nintendo stated that players' save data would transfer over to the newly purchased titles and that these games would be available to purchase on October 8, 2026.[1]

After the presentation, more details emerged from Square Enix who stated that they would no longer offer the "Cloud" versions of any Kingdom Hearts games, effective June 9, 2026 and that on June 9, 2027 they would end support for the cloud servers that host these titles.[2] Additionally, GameSpot reported that players who had originally purchased any Kingdom Hearts "Cloud" version would be entitled to a 50% off coupon when buying the new digital version(s) of Kingdom Hearts. With this action, Square Enix will effectively be blocking access to their original purchases, forcing players to buy the affected Kingdom Hearts titles for a second time if they would like to continue enjoying them. Physical releases will not be eligible for this discount.[3]
