stating "Recently updated" not particularly helpful
Hey what happened to my account?
On the "create account" page, near the bottom, it says, "We have recently updated our privacy policy." How recently?  It doesn't say.  The logical assumption which must be made is that it has changed seconds ago, and must be reread.  How about instead displaying something along the lines of, "Our privacy policy was last updated on <date>", even if there does not exist a way to automate the display of the date, and the "create account" page (or the page of any other such notice) must be edited by hand?
I am currently using "Edit Source" as a way to communicate, but I am not sure what happened. What happened to "Edit" what happened to me not able to reply? What did I do?

:@Jerry468 This happens in discussions, for some reason there is no 'edit' button in discussion pages, instead use the 'reply' button next to discussions or the 'Add Topic' button on the top right. ==Dependence on phone app for basic functions, make an article?==

I'm on Frontier internet, only gig around and I think they know it. We got fiber a few years ago and if you want wi-fi you either go with the Amazon Eeros(?) or learn how to do your own router. The Eeros seems that you can only access settings with a phone app, no desktop. Would this qualify it for an article on here? I've also heard about sleezy back door things happening either from Amazon or the IP itself, that they can access settings the customer cannot. Anyhow I don't want to just go ahead and write some poorly put together article and it shouldn't even be on here. Sawbones (talk) 17:57, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
"Random Page" should be front and center :)
:This probably depends on the level of coverage. have there been any news articles (local or otherwise) which are complaining about this? Forcing the customer to use unneccesarily invasive software to access a service is something which definitely fits within the wiki's scope, and anything which is happening across a whole ISP would be large-scale enough, but the final thing an article needs is good sources Keith (talk) 08:27, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
When browsing without an account "Random Page" is hidden behind a menu. Is there a way to plop it right next to "search" or in the middle of the home page to better facilitate visitors? (or maybe a browse button? Or a "New here? Read about consumer rights here!" where it gives a quick into and recommends a good page to start browsing).
:I'm noticing a double standard of "pc app dependence" being ok and "phone app" dependency being less than ok. I believe that mobile devices should be equally capable as desktop devices, especially when you put windows and android tablets side by side.
:There are both cases of "companion software"1 getting obsolete on their respective platform for one reason or another. Despite outnumbering desktop devices, I noted : shorter device lifespan, faster software obsolescence cycle (think android 14), difficulty of support on different hardware, exposure to phenomenal amounts of user data, (not getting treated seriously?).
:Over-reliance on companion software for product operation or basic features access is present on both desktop and mobile.
:1Companion software - gives convenient access or expands features of a hardware or software product. Examples include Microtik WinBox, Eero, etc...
:p.s. I'm not aware of any existing term describing something you'd download to use something, but "companion software" seems alright. Actually now that I think about it, drivers and libraries are a kind of companion software too. Its just a little overwhelming to be a visitor curious about consumer rights and not having a clear place to start. Mallveo (talk) 21:39, 10 December 2025 (UTC)

Hi everyone, as a fan of Paradox games and somebody that really wants to write in this wiki i wanted to ask something... what right exactly the paradox incident covers? i want to do it, but i dont understand quite exactly what i should do at writting it, why its an anti ownership or anti consumer practice, i need to understand that first to start it, because if i dont recognize well the systematic issue i think that i cannot treat it. :Hi, sorry for none of us replying! Pinging @Keith as he can give a much better response, but from what I understand we are doing a full UI redesign in 2026. As for things being front and center, maybe we could consider that as an option when we do that, but there is a sidebar already showing some important information on the left. Hope that helps. ::I think the thing they're meaning with this is that the sidebar starts out collapsed if you're not logged in, so it's not obviously visible to a new user. This is something that should probably be fixed regardless of any UI redesign as I think the sidebar's pretty important for site navigation.

As per PrivacyGuides FAQ page https://www.privacyguides.org/en/about/privacytools/
Top articles correction
"In September 2021, every active contributor unanimously agreed to move from PrivacyTools to work on this site: Privacy Guides. This decision was made because PrivacyTools’ founder and controller of the domain name had disappeared for an extended period of time and could not be contacted.
I moved the page Milwaukee battery DRM because "DRM" was lowercase previously. The main page still uses the formatting from the redirect that the page move left behind, even after purging the cache, so it must be manually updated. More importantly, the link for Digital rights management is dead; I'm going to add a redirect, but I'm leaving this here as a heads up. Bythmusters (talk) 18:05, 29 January 2026 (UTC)

Having built a reputable site and set of services on PrivacyTools.io, this caused grave concerns for the future of PrivacyTools, as any future disruption could wipe out the entire organization with no recovery method. This transition was communicated to the PrivacyTools community many months in advance via a variety of channels including its blog, Twitter, Reddit, and Mastodon to ensure the entire process went as smoothly as possible. We did this to ensure nobody was kept in the dark, which has been our modus operandi since our team was created, and to make sure Privacy Guides was recognized as the same reliable organization that PrivacyTools was before the transition.
:Done. DRM link was probs alr fixed by JakeL. AnotherConsumerRightsPerson (talk) 17:16, 30 January 2026 (UTC)

After the organizational move was completed, the founder of PrivacyTools returned and began to spread misinformation about the Privacy Guides project. They continue to spread misinformation in addition to operating a paid link farm on the PrivacyTools domain. We are creating this page to clear up any misconceptions."
Seeking Help to Reconfigure Bluetooth Settings on a Medical Prosthetic Knee
The current PrivacyTools.io site has obvious but undisclosed sponsored promotions of Nord Security products (NordVPN, Surfshark, Incogni) and maybe others as well. The events that transpired that led to the forming of PrivacyGuides are verifiable through searching community posts at the time and other sources. For those that remember the "leading" members of PrivacyTools at the time (Jonah Aragon, Daniel Gray, Niek-de-Wilde, freddy...), all of them were the ones who made PrivacyGuides and moved along with the whole community. Their forum and other channels are filled with community discussion and all recommendation additions and removals are debated in public as was the case with PrivacyTools in the past. Meanwhile today PrivacyTools.io doesn't even have an "About" page or anything, and while there is a Github page linked on the site, there doesn't seem to be a way to actually contribute (https://github.com/privacytoolsIO/privacy-tools/discussions/18).
Hi everyone,

Addition of NOYB.eu to the Consumer Tools section
I’m hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. I’m a transfemoral amputee using a second-hand Bluetooth-enabled prosthetic knee. The knee itself is fully functional, but it’s an older, discontinued model, and that’s where the problem starts.

Suggestion to add https://noyb.eu/en to one of the subsections of the Consumer Tools sections. Possibly in the "Legal & complaint filing" subsection. It's a non-profit, specifically about data privacy and protection within the EU. Socks (talk) 17:05, 16 August 2025 (UTC)
The manufacturer’s configuration software is now obsolete and no longer supported, so my prosthetist cannot reconfigure the knee using official tools anymore. I do have legitimate access:
• The device is mine
• I can successfully connect to it via Bluetooth
• I have the pairing key and can use the mobile app
However, the mobile app only exposes very limited settings, and I need access to deeper / advanced configuration parameters that directly affect my gait, stability, and overall mobility. These settings clearly exist (they were adjustable when the device was still supported), but they’re now locked behind software that no longer runs.

Need to confer with Champion Power Equipment employees
What I’m trying to understand is whether it’s possible to:
• Inspect or understand the Bluetooth communication used by the original software/app
• Identify the relevant commands, characteristics, or protocol used to configure the knee
• Modify or send specific configuration values using modern tools, without relying on the deprecated software
This is not about bypassing security or hacking a device I don’t own — it’s a medical device that I depend on daily, and I’m simply trying to regain access to functionality that the hardware is already capable of, but software obsolescence has taken away.

I'm a small engine mechanic and I'm going to start a post about the dual fuel generators they produce. They are flawed regardless of intentions, and would like exact specs if anyone has that information, Mainly need the cylinder, and piston specs as well as the dry fuel ratio.
I’m open to learning and doing this properly, and I understand this may involve BLE analysis, protocol reverse-engineering, or embedded/Bluetooth tooling. Even high-level guidance on where to start (tools, workflows, or similar experiences) would be incredibly helpful.

The case is a denied warranty for one of our customers that I'm sure has to be a common issue with this design.
If anyone has experience with:
• Bluetooth or BLE reverse engineering
• GATT analysis, packet sniffing, or custom Bluetooth protocols
or is willing to help guide me through this, I’d be deeply grateful. This isn’t just a technical curiosity — it’s about maintaining my independence and quality of life.

I plan to research online but It would be faster to have people who have direct access to the information, We were and still are a warranty center for them but one of champion's employees insulted us and our competence on the case I'm referring to, and we haven't gotten any contact from champion since so not really in the situation to reach out for information that they'd most likely deny or ignore us on.
Thank you so much for reading. Daniel2299 (talk) 23:54, 6 February 2026 (UTC)

If anyone on here is an employee in their parts department, or a similar department with access to publicly known part numbers and specs please reach out, the small engine industry is a problem lately that's only getting worse. It would be nice to document issues that arise It would also be nice to have someone with engineering experience and credentials to verify data and calculate it themselves, especially in the gas powered equipment sector/industry The Wang (talk) 20:20, 16 August 2025 (UTC)
Add diagrams
Will this wiki publish regular backups?
I know this is likely already covered under some other site or maybe it is here and I missed it.

The Wikimedia Foundation regularly publishes compressed archives of its wikis. This sets an example I wish every website with text-based user-generated contributions would follow. It is important to preserve the contribution history should this site go offline. Besides, text is well compressable.
Would it be possible to have a section for an archive of wiring diagramsand maybe user manuals? I havee no ideas how it could be archived ie by year the product was made, or company, or company product subproduct.

Many websites in the past have shut down with little to no warning, resulting in the loss of years of volunteer contributions. We need to pre-empt this.
I worry that may bring unwanted attention from companies trying to keep their diagrams proprietary. That or this will be the location of the next top secret leak.

<blockquote>
I could also see this being a data sink that is rarely used.
Issue: No Backup, No Distribution
For reasons and examples stated in this article, any centralized web-based service will go offline some day. Some sooner, some later. Popularity is not even a guarantee that a service gets continued
</blockquote>

What happened to the main page
Hi, I am new here!
why does the main page look like this https://ibb.co/21XSXgWC https://ibb.co/MkDgJrf1 ? Did I do something, how do I fix it? Andrew V (talk) 17:54, 5 March 2026 (UTC)

So I was wondering about the overall things of the consumer wiki by Louis Rossman (Apologies if I get the name wrong), and so I decided to join on the bandwagon. But I do have a question: Why is this wiki centered around the US? I live in a different continent, predominately, Europe. I do have a reason since most of which the "Consumer Tools" is centered around the US, such as the Better Business Bureau, FDA, and others. Since my homeland doesn't exactly have those said agencies like you guys do, and that is what I have been wondering about.
:Don't worry - Jake's just playing around with the templates and formatting to try and make it look a bit nicer! should settle down shortly Keith (talk) 18:05, 5 March 2026 (UTC)

An incorrect link and more
:@Jerry468 Most of our contributors are from the US, and Rossmann himself is American. But this is a global wiki and we would welcome your contributions, especially in Europe. I think ideally the goal is to have coverage of consumer rights violations everywhere. We just are not yet there. Thanks for signing up! The Clippy Daily Dot article link is incorrect in the "In the News" template being transcluded to the Main Page
:the link is   https://www.dailydot.com/culture/youtube-clippy-pfx/
:but should be  https://dailydot.com/youtube-clippy-pfp
The correct link says "pfp" (profile picture) and the incorrect link says "pfx" for some reason.

Suggestion: Implementing a /robots.txt page
Robots.txt is a page that's used by web crawlers to set rules, like disallow pages or crawl delay. I just noticed that this page is missing. Maybe duckduckgo's crawler will finally index this wiki. Yappermaster69 (talk) 21:26, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
It was a pain to find the transcluded template with the error:
Since this other similar page is linked from the template:
It's atypical of MediaWiki based projects to not directly link to the view template page from the template itself. And maybe the page similarity issue should be solved with a merge?

:I've passed this on to the infra guys! thank you for pointing it out Keith (talk) 22:19, 29 August 2025 (UTC)

Suggestion: Consumer Rights Wins
Lastly, and most significantly, the historical view of the Main Page at the time of the edit that added the template in question (6 July 2025)
includes the Daily Dot Clippy story (12 August 2025) which wasn't available at the time of the edit, demonstrating that the transclusion was refreshed even for the older revisions of the Main Page. The older "renderings" of the page shouldn't have been modified with updated transclusions not just for preservation purposes, but also because it would waste a bunch of the server time dealing with extra stuff in the MediaWiki Job Queue.

I would like to suggest the creation of a page/category where we can advocate for products/services that are 'consumer rights wins' with repairability or other features that qualify them as a good investment or a not-crappy-capitalist-product.
:Sorry for not seeing this earlier and thanks a lot for this! I've done the first as it's very easy, but @JakeL could do the second one as I'm not sure how to fix it. I don't know whether this already exists or not but I could not find it if it does.
Identify Consumer Tools with Anti-Consumer Concessions?
For example:
I specifically bring this up because of the recommendation of Trim, the OneMain version of Rocket Money. When clicking the link, I'd initially expected it would be some financial tool with crowd-sourced identifiers for various subscription services that you could drop your statements into to identify unintentional spending. On actually reading the Privacy Policy, however, it's very much the same case as any other major finance app where they're sharing your every identifier to advertisers and retaining your personal information for up to 12 months.

Framework laptops https://frame.work/: user repairable and expandable to a huge degree with customization.
I'm not saying this is inherently wrong or that such practices should immediately disqualify it from being listed on the site, but I do think it would be in the spirit of the wiki to add some kind of identifier for tools/services which are run by entities prone to anti-consumer practices, just to help someone who might assume that any tool recommended by users of the wiki would also abide by the apparent values of the wiki, without them actually verifying that such is the case. I think something similar to the adjacent tool's [requires subscription] label would suffice. Maybe even just an asterisk with a line at the bottom of the box clarifying that while this tool is useful, it comes with one or more anti-consumer concessions.

Epson ink tank printers https://epson.com/ecotank-ink-tank-printers: While the ink tanks do have 'keyed' fill holes, it is far easier to bypass that mechanism than DRM on competitor brand ink cartridges. Even the genuine ink bottles are far cheaper in all metrics, and produce far less environmental waste. According to Epson, a set of black and color bottles (sold for $75.95) replaces approximately 80 cartridges and prints ~6000 pages black and ~5500 pages color. Not having DRM also helps prevent software issues even when using genuine cartridges. Joe Schmo (talk) 16:01, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
I think the ultimate "fix" for this is to create individual pages for each tool, or category of tool, or one long "Consumer Tools" page with fleshed out details on each item, but that's a much more involved project than what I think would be sufficient for right now(TM).

:This has been suggested a bit. I think it could be useful to share wins as a result of this wiki or the clippy movement? I believe that sharing general good consumer protection isn't considered in scope here, just to keep this wiki focused on rights violations. 📎 JackFromWisconsin (talk &#124; contribs) 16:05, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
That said, I can also see the argument that one should be privy to the privacy policy and ToS with any product, so perhaps that behavior is assumed and this isn't considered to be within the scope of the wiki. That, along with determining the specifics if something were to be implemented to address my concern, is why I thought it would make sense to put this in the Talk page.
