Jailbreaking (also known as rooting) is the act of gaining control of the software on a device.[1]

Reasons to jailbreak

Jailbreaking enables users to install unsigned applications and tweak functionality of the OS.[2] It also allows users to pirate applications on their devices.

Legality

Jailbreaking was declared exempt from the DMCA in 2010[3] so is completely legal in the United States.
