Blur is a 2010 arcade style street racing game featuring power-ups, speed boosts, and online multiplayer made for Windows, PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360[1], but was discontinued in 2011, when the game studio behind Blur (Bizarre Creations) was shut down by Activision[2]. Blur is currently off sale.[3] Blur servers were brought back online in 2023.[4]
Background
All platforms gave Blur favourable reviews.[5] Sales for Blur in the USA were 31,000 in 5 days[6] and 500,000 when it was discontinued.[7] A sequel was planned but due to Activision ending Bizarre Creation that project went abandoned and never finished.[8] Although a free-to-play spin off was released in 2013.[9]
Discontinuation Notice
Activision' statement:
Over the past three years since our purchase of Bizarre Creations, the fundamentals of the racing genre have changed significantly. Although we made a substantial investment in creating a new IP, Blur, it did not find a commercial audience. Bizarre is a very talented team of developers; however, because of the broader economic factors impacting the market, we are exploring our options regarding the future of the studio, including a potential sale of the business.[10]
Consumer response
The consumer response to Activision discontinuing Blur was of disappointment.[11] People saw huge hopes for the IP and as so they made new unofficial servers in replacement[12] and the game is hard to find, but through abandonware sites (which might be legally in a grey zone) the game can still be obtained for PC.[13]
