Incidents

[edit | edit source]

Target has been criticized over the years due to their lack of transparency, data collection efforts, and lack of security measures.

This is a list of all consumer-protection incidents this company is involved in. Any incidents not mentioned here can be found in the Target category.

Data predictions (2012)

[edit | edit source]

In 2012, Target predicted a teen pregnancy before her parents did. This was done by using data analytics and learning shopping habits and later sending coupons to her address.[3]

Target data breach (2013)

[edit | edit source]

The 2013 Target data breach was a data breach that effected most Target customers. The data breach occurred during Nov-Dec 2013 and affected over 40 million customers information most notably their debit/credit cards.[4]

Biometric data collection (2024)

[edit | edit source]

Target often extensively collects biometric information inside their stores and online. A lawsuit was filed in April of 2024 against Target Corporation for collecting and sharing data without her consent.[5]

Target has also been criticized due to lack of transparency of their privacy practices.
