Mastodon is a decentralized free and open-source social networking platform. It operates as a federated network communicating with instances part of the Fediverse through the ActivityPub protocol.
It was first released on 16 March 2016 by Eugen Rochko and is actively developed by Mastodon gGmbH.
mastodon.social is the first party instance operated by the developers.
