TRMNL: Difference between revisions
Created page, but I don't know enough tech to continue writing. I think this belongs in the wiki as an example of a company doing it right. Found it through this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIcZZX10pa4 |

TRMNL is an electronics start-up founded by Ryan Kulp in October 2023. It began on Kickstarter where it received $157,677 in public backing out of a $5,000 goal.[1] Their sole product offering is a customizable e-ink display which is marketed as being developer-friendly with no subscription fees. The company provides publicly accessible guidance on DIY building a similar device and using TRMNL's API.[2][3] They also claim to not collect any data that is personally identifiable to their users.[4]
TRMNL offers users four methods of building their display:[5]
- Default - buy TRMNL device, that runs TRMNL firmware, and pings TRMNL server
- BYOD - build user's own device, that runs TRMNL firmware, and pings TRMNL server
- This option requires that users pay "a small monthly fee to cover [the user's] compute time on [TRMNL's] servers, since [TRMNL doesn't] make any revenue on a device sale."[5]
- BYOD/S - build user's own device, mod TRMNL firmware, and ping the user's own server
- BYOS - buy TRMNL device, mod TRMNL firmware, and ping the user's own server
