HP Laptop Subscription

HP Laptop Subscription is a laptop subscription service by HP which takes device ownership out of the consumer's hands and forces the consumer to be locked into HP's terms, notable ones included here:

  1. Ownership: The consumer will never, in any capacity, own the laptop they receive with the subscription. If the consumer cancels their subscription, they must return the laptop alongside any additional peripherals bought in the deal.
  2. Commitment Period: If the consumer retains their subscription after the 30-day trial period, the consumer is locked into a 1-year commitment term with their plan of choice. If the consumer decides to cancel early after the trial period, then the remaining balance for the rest of the year must be paid in full.
  3. Limits on Sharing: The consumer is allocated one device per person, per account, per household. This means that multiple subscriptions cannot be used to fulfill multiple user's needs, only one laptop is allocated.
  4. Remote Lockdown: If the consumer fails to pay the monthly fee or violates HP's terms of the subscription, then HP retains the right to use their Absolute remote security software to remote access, lockdown, restrict, or otherwise inhibit or block HP provided services or functions.
  5. No Tampering/Removal of HP Software: The consumer cannot tamper with, attempt to, or remove the services pre-installed on their HP laptop, especially concerning their Absolute security software. Violation may result in the subscription being cancelled/denied, further payment being demanded, and/or legal action under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (18 U.S.C. § 1030).

Other Concerns

  • Highest subscription tier laptop has built-in 5G eSim cellular with data provided through the subscription, HP could have remote access in areas with no WiFi
  • Extra peripherals (mouse + keyboard, HP printer, display) bought in the deal cannot be owned and must be returned with the laptop if the subscription is canceled; additional monthly cost, no option for a one-time purchase
  • Data retrieval for a locked down laptop must be done over support, and is at the discretion of the support techs and your subscription status
  • No/limited support for laptops with modifications or any other product not in-line with your subscription, and additional fees may be due if HP claims that technical support was "obstructed or made difficult" due to these modifications
