Age Verification

The age verification consists of a feature integrated in the operating system. It blocks the download of some applications from the App Store and blocks websites considered as "mature". VPNs do not work for bypassing this system. The only way to disable those blocks is by age verifying, which requires to send the information of the device owner's credit card. [citation needed]

Consumer response

Receptions of the announcement and release are mostly negative. Negative comments and critiques highlight these aspects:

  • Privacy concerns: The fact users have to submit information about their credit card has raised concerns, due to risks of data breaches and the possible retention or usage of that information. Some of them are concerned that in the future the verification could ask for more sensitive information.
  • Anti-ownership practices: Some users critiziced the how Apple forces the Age Verification and limits the user's freedom, no mattering if the device owner is already an adult. There are also concerns about how much restrictions could be if the user doesn't want to verify their age or if it is a minor.
  • Effectiveness of the system: Users have critiziced the effectiveness of this method, because children could bypass the verification by taking their parents' credit card. Also, some users have critiziced the verification requirement of using a credit card, due to not all adults have one.
