iOS 26.4 Beta Age verification
iOS 26.4 Beta Age verification

iOS, the operating system of the Apple iPhone, has introduced on its Beta version 26.4 an integrated Age Verification in the operating system. [1][2] This feature will be launched on the United Kingdom, Brazil, Australia, Singapore and in the US States of Louisiana and Utah.

Age Verification

[edit | edit source]

The age verification consists of a feature integrated in the operating system. It blocks the download of some applications from the App Store and blocks websites considered as "mature". VPNs do not work for bypassing this system. The only way to disable those blocks is by age verifying, which requires to send the information of the device owner's credit card. [2]

Consumer response

[edit | edit source]

Receptions of the announcement and release are mostly negative. Negative comments and critiques highlight these aspects:

  • Privacy concerns: The fact users have to submit information about their credit card has raised concerns, due to risks of data breaches and the possible retention or usage of that information. Some of them are concerned that in the future the verification could ask for more sensitive information.
  • Anti-ownership practices: Some users criticized how Apple forces the Age Verification and limits the user's freedom, no mattering if the device owner is already an adult. There are also concerns about how much restrictions could be if the user doesn't want to verify their age or if it is a minor.
  • Effectiveness of the system: Users have criticized the effectiveness of this method, because children could bypass the verification by taking their parents' credit card. Also, some users have criticized the requirement of a credit card for verification, as not all adults have one.
  • Access issues: Some users are reporting that they do not have any of the ID verification methods Apple accepts. As a result, some of those who installed the update, including many adults over 18, are unable to access certain features on their device. Currently, there does not seem to be a way to reverse this [3].
