SteamOS is a Valve developed operating system made specifically with gaming in mind as it comes with Steam preinstalled. It can be found on Valve's first-party hardware, which includes the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame. Starting in 2025, Valve added support to include third-party devices, such as the Lenovo Legion Go and Asus ROG Ally. It can alternatively be installed on personal computers but comes without official support from Valve.

It is a Linux distribution, based on Arch Linux. So while the Steam application is proprietary, the operating system is free and open-source software.
