Shell Found Liable for Raping and torturing Nigerian's
In 1990 through 1996, Shell, with collaboration with the Nigerian Government, tortured, raped and executed over 1,000 Nigerians after protest by the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni people.[1]
Shell Charged Consumers more using Debit Cards
On April 16, 2021, Shell was hit with a class action lawsuit for misleading customers on purchases with debit cards resulted in a lower price, however they were charged with a credit price. It alleges the company knew the card processing policy to be deceptive, deliberately refusing to disclose its policy in order to gain more profit.[2] As of March 3, the lawsuit is still ongoing.
Shell Charges Customers more Using Gift Cards
On January 10, 2024, a lawsuit was filed against Shell for allegedly charging customers at credit card price for their gasoline services, violating the California civil code. [3] [4]As of March 3, the lawsuit is still in progress.
Shells Data Leak
On May 2024, Shell suffered an security breach affecting over 80,000 customers in Australia, United Kingdom, France, India, Singapore, Philippines, Netherlands, Malaysia, and Canada. A month later on June, a hacker group going by the name 888 publicly disclosed the breach on BreachForums, sharing customers codes, names, email addresses, home address, phone numbers, login credentials, and loyalty points balances.[5]
Shell responded to the situation claiming it was the result of their third party vendors. A shell Spokesman responded to the situation;[6]
Shell is not the owner nor controller of the acquired data, and so we are not able to comment further on this incident. We take cybersecurity very seriously, and we will continue to monitor our IT systems and maintain our security posture,
SMS Fuel Rewards Program Lawsuit
On August 2025, Adrian Coronel filed a lawsuit against Shell, alleging that Shell continued to send two more promotional messages even after he opt-out of Shells Fuel Rewards SMS program via texting "stop", which violates the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).[7]As of March 3, the lawsuit is still in progress.
