GOG.com (formerly Good Old Games) is a digital provider of DRM-free video games.

Consumer-impact summary

User Freedom

The GOG Galaxy client is optional to install and update games.

User Privacy

Games that do not require internet access or external servers are more likely to be privacy-respecting than those that do. The lack of DRM on the games prevents remote modifications on the games.

Business Model

All video games provided by GOG are DRM-free. Games purchased by users are owned by them, and can be reinstalled whenever they want. GOG makes money directly from selling the games rather than from forcing users to subscribe or modifying the product with DRM after the sale.

Market Control

Market share is approximately between 10-17%

While GOG is a popular DRM-free game shop, DRM game services like Steam are more popular in the general gaming space. Also game consoles, like Xbox and Playstation, offer their own game libraries, which usually include DRM.

GOG Preservation Program

On November 13, 2024, GOG launched the GOG Preservation Program. This iniciative seeks to guarantee the availability of classic video games and their compatibility in existent and future systems. Games that are part of the GOG Preservation Program appear with a "Good Old Game" label in the GOG catalog.
