Cricut, Inc. is an American brand of cutting plotters, or motorised cutting machines, designed for home crafters. The machines are used for cutting paper, felt, and vinyl^[1] plus materials such as fabric, leather, matboard, and wood. Cricut is headquartered in South Jordan, Utah.^[2]

Controversies

Attempted move to force subscriptions

In March of 2021, Cricut announced a change to their Terms of Service, so that users without a "Cricut Access" subscription can only upload up to 20 images to the Design Space app per calendar month.^[3] Since users have to upload projects they want to cut to Cricut's cloud, this change would lock customers without a subscription out of using their purchased machine. Online backlash was significant enough that the CEO reverted this announcement a few days later.^[4]

Replacement warranty policy

In 2023, YouTuber Buy it Fix it bought a second hand Cricut Maker 3, which was still under warranty, and alleged Cricut had failed to offer an option to repair the product. They instead offered to furnish a new device and instructed the consumer to dispose of the non-functioning device. Buy it Fix it further alleges Cricut bans the serial numbers of the devices due to be disposed, making them impossible to use with their proprietary software, effectively ruining any chance of repairing the device in the future.^[5]
