Add topic1Password Lifetime License Revocation
[edit source]1Password had a major incident that is not listed on the page. The issue is related to their old "standalone licenses", which many uses believed these to be perpetual license (aka Lifetime Licenses? - though I don't think these were ever marketed as such).
People bought these standalone licenses and then 1Password forced them to into their subscription model as reported here and here.
The main issue ocurred from the transition from 1Password 7 to 1Password 8.
Some further information:
"1Password 7 gave users a choice between a standalone license for the service or a monthly subscription on 1Password.com [...] However, there are still those who like to pay for a service only once and forget about it. For such users, 1Password is providing a trade-in discount where users can exchange their existing licenses to get 50% off for first 3 years." (source).
Potential text for the incident section:
1Password’s so-called “lifetime license” (i.e., standalone license) was really a perpetual license for a specific major version, not unlimited future upgrades: 1Password 7 for Windows launched with standalone licensing on May 29, 2018, however, after the release of 1 Password 8, previous licenses would not be offered and previous versions would no longer be supported (source), making 1Password effectively membership-only and pushing users toward a 1Password account. While existing 1Password 7 licenses did not expire, their end-of-life meant that users would likely bump on vulnerabilities (see comment by 1P_SimonH here).
