There is so much to be added here. I have a busy weekend, but will leave small notes here for later for either myself or others to add.

Nintendo shut down a Smash Bros tournament for using a mod to play online as use of unauthorized modifications when the purpose was SAFETY DURING COVID

Nintendo shut down a charity to fund for mental health after streamer Etika committed suicide, it was in honor of him

Vimm's lair, emuparadise, $12M lawsuit

The Nintendo creator program on YouTube, dropping ambassadors for talking about mods, taking down videos of modded Zelda games

The taking down of tons of fan games, sometimes in favor of a game that is time limited

The time they banned all my payment methods and account, blocking me from making purchases because their system flagged me as fraud from refreshing a pre-order page too many times

And of course, 7 years ago when they automatically opted everyone into forced arbitration in the Switch EULA, and opt out was manually requested

The only thing I don't think we can cover is vimm/Emuparadise. Discuss it with people on the discord if you want to get a general idea. JamesTDG (talk) 01:32, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Update as of June 01 2025
Completed/Not Planned:
Nintendo shut down a Smash Bros tournament for using a mod to play online as use of unauthorized modifications when the purpose was SAFETY DURING COVID - "The Big House Online Tournament (2020)".
Vimm's lair, emuparadise, $12M lawsuit - Not Planned.
The Nintendo creator program on YouTube, dropping ambassadors for talking about mods, taking down videos of modded Zelda games - "Nintendo Creators Program" (Needs a main article.) Note that (IIRC) this section doesn't mention the mods or modded Zelda games (yet).
[...] 7 years ago when they automatically opted everyone into forced arbitration in the Switch EULA, and opt out was manually requested - "Controversial agreements and policies" (Main article: "Nintendo's May 2025 Policy Updates")
Still needed/planned:
- I added an intro paragraph that discusses the legality briefly, and I think the Nishiura quote linked on this discussion would fit in nicely somewhere in it.
- Joy-Con drift section needs citations (and possibly a main article, judging from the red links). Couple of potential sources:
https://www.theverge.com/21504741/nintendo-switch-joy-con-drift-problem-explained - Overview of the problem.
CSK&D Files Class Action Lawsuit Against Nintendo of America, Inc. Relating to Joy-Con “Drifting” Issues – Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith LLP - Archived link for a class action lawsuit against Nintendo in regards to Joy-Con drift.
...Just leaving this here to make it easier for anyone else to improve this article if they so wish.

A fun quote, but I dont know how to work it in: "Regarding emulators, patent attorney and deputy general manager of Nintendo’s intellectual property department, Koji Nishiura, agreed that they are, technically, completely legal." There is something to be added now, Nintendo forces users in the US to go through arbitration: https://accounts.nintendo.com/term/eula/US?lang=en-US (clause number 16, starting from 8/5/2025).

While this isn't enough to warrant its own section, I do believe that if you write about vimm/Emuparadise, you should also mention the removal of several of Nintendo's websites from the Wayback Machine (https://wiki.archiveteam.org/index.php/List_of_websites_excluded_from_the_Wayback_Machine). They also excluded the Yuzu emulator's github (https://github.com/yuzu-emu/yuzu-mainline). The section can be titled something along the lines of "Efforts Against Community Archival". A few other companies have websites here, though some may be here for security reasons. Also, the list is NOT COMPREHENSIVE. There are some excluded websites not mentioned in the list. - Some Guy

Not sure if the sources are strong enough to use here, but if they are, it'd be good to cover the incident where they stalked a 3DS homebrew developer. The main concern I have is that due to the information being from the gigaleak, the articles all end up sourcing the same few social media posts. Maybe including sources that show the gigaleak's general veracity alongside the articles for this particular issue would be enough? Here's a list of a few articles I was able to find about the situation:
