Toyota in general have historically been one of the most "open" of vehicle manufacturers when it comes to providing schematics and using many generic parts with >3 suppliers each to build their vehicles. I'm not fangirling, I'm speaking from experience.

The summary of what this guy has written seems to be, Toyota may or may not save data for long periods of time, and when challenged don't appear to have the data to hand.

There are no accounts or stories about consequences of having this installed, and implementing this design as described would require SIM cards, cellular connectivity and expensive data plans.

Can we please discuss this here? Are these devices being installed by Toyota or the dealer? Are there SIM cards in your Toyota vehicle? Does it only happen in one country or more than one? Or is this just a disclaimer with no teeth due to some overruling body, like the EU?

I, for one, am willing to put my mouth where my vehicle is, or my vehicle where my mouth is, and state that my UK Urban Cruiser MK1 1.4D4D 2011 Registered 6-Speed Manual has been personally searched by myself and several Pen Testers and the only comms and telemetry devices were my own. I have discussed these issues with Toyota myself and they clearly state that I own my car and may modify as I please within the law. I even have various softwares to change behaviours, like my smart entry system (which no longer opens the passenger rear door with the rest since there is no seat there, just a computer).
