SunStrong Management LLC puts solar monitoring app behind paywall

On January 29th, 2024, SunStrong Management LLC sent a mass email to owners of SunPower solar monitoring hardware informing them they had recently acquired the Sun Power remote solar monitoring app from Sun Power and would begin charging a monthly subscription for certain features that were previously included with the purchase of the solar monitoring hardware, which costs upwards of $1,600. SunStrong Management LLC has also not responded to questions regarding whether historical user data (such as solar usage statistics, PII, or app usage) would be sold or shared to third parties and affiliates.
Background
SunPower was a US company that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on August 5th, 2024. They had previously sold and licensed their solar monitoring hardware/software solutions to over 500,000 households across the United States. Through their propriety app and website, users were able to monitor their solar panel health and output as well as their home energy consumption.
Shortly after their bankruptcy, SunStrong Management LLC purchased certain assets which included customer databases and the remote monitoring app.
Mass Email Announcement
On January 29th, 2024, SunStrong Management LLC sent a mass email to owners of SunPower solar monitoring hardware informing them they had recently acquired the SunPower remote solar monitoring app and would begin charging a monthly premium for certain features that were included in the original purchase of the SunPower hardware, notably the ability to monitor your solar usage remotely.
As of February 21st, 2025, SunStrong Management, LLC has not responded to requests for further information about the changes to the app features nor how historical customer data will be shared or whether it will be sold to third parties.
