Reddit user u/Basic_Strike turned their Nintendo Switch 2 in to Nintendo for a repair due to a problematic device battery, however on July 7th, 2025, u/Basic_Strike reported on r/ConsoleRepair that Nintendo refused to repair the device under warranty due to water damage within the unit.[1][2]

Background

Historically, Nintendo had restricted console repairs under authorized repair shops, and said shops have been known to be untrustworthy with their repairs. Additionally, consoles have been reported to have corrosion within the device,[3] likely associated with factors such as Nintendo stockpiling Nintendo Switch 2 consoles for release,[4][5] and Japan,[6] among other regions the console is sold in exhibiting extremely high humidity.

Refusal of warranty

On July 7th, 2025, u/Basic_Strike reported on r/ConsoleRepair that Nintendo refused to repair the device under warranty due to water damage within the unit.[1]

The user disclosed inside their post that they were playing on their Nintendo Switch 2 exclusively inside of their living room, and roughly after a week of owning the device, the console was entirely bricked, being unable to power on. They reported testing the device with an Anker battery, noticing that the device was still drawing between 0.7W and 1.5W of power. After following basic troubleshooting steps,[citation needed - check comment] the device was then sent to Nintendo under the expectation that they would be capable of taking advantage of the 1-year manufacturer warranty.

Instead, after the device was received by Nintendo, they were informed that there was corrosion around the CPU and LCD caused by water damage, quoting a ¥35,000 (~$240 USD) repair bill. u/Basic_Strike had to escalate this incident to 4 Nintendo Support agents, all telling them that they had to pay for the expensive repair, and additionally being vague about the corrosion, providing only the rough location of said corrosion and refusing to provide photos of the damage.

Instead of paying for the repairs, the user had to demand that the device should be returned unrepaired, and soon after received their originally damaged device and took a video of the unboxing,[7] providing a demonstration that the device does not function, and that it also does drain power.

Consumer response

Reaction from individuals within u/Basic_Strike's Reddit posts[1][2] have been generally negative towards Nintendo, while online coverage of the incident has been limited, only currently seeing a video from FritangaPlays.[8]
