Qidi
Qidi Tech (浙江启迪电子有限公司), founded in 2014, is a Chinese manufacturer specializing in the development and production of 3D printers. The company, based in Wenzhou, China, offers a range of FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) and resin printers aimed at both beginners and professional users.[1]
The Incident
In early 2025, a Reddit user known as u/ProgressLocal1511 reported a catastrophic fire originating from his Qidi Tech X-Plus 3 3D printer. According to the user's public account, the printer was in operation with PETG filament. Approximately 15 to 30 minutes after a routine check, smoke alarms were triggered. The user discovered dense smoke and flames emanating from the rear of the machine. The fire escalated rapidly and, despite the presence of the homeowner and a fire extinguisher, resulted in the complete destruction of the family's house.[2]
The Core Consumer Rights Issue
The central issue is the consumer's right to product safety and adequate recourse. The incident touches upon several key aspects of "new" consumer protection:
- Product Safety of Complex Electronics: The fire points to a potential failure in the printer's electronic components. Consumers must be able to trust that such devices can operate without posing a significant fire hazard.
- Manufacturer Accountability: The manufacturer's reaction is a critical part of the case. Instead of transparently addressing a potential safety flaw, the company's alleged actions amplified the problem.
- Global Supply Chains: The difficulty in holding a China-based manufacturer legally and financially accountable for damages that occurred in another country is a significant hurdle for consumers worldwide.
Manufacturer's Response and Censorship
The response from Qidi Tech became a major point of criticism. According to reports, when u/ProgressLocal1511 posted about the incident on the official Qidi Tech subreddit, the company's moderators allegedly removed the posts and banned the user. This attempt at censorship backfired, leading to the Streisand effect, where the effort to suppress information only increased its visibility across other online communities.[2]
The company later proposed a firmware update intended to mitigate risks. This solution was heavily criticized by the community as an inadequate software patch for what was suspected to be a critical hardware-level defect.[citation needed]
Community-driven Technical Analysis
The 3D printing community collaboratively analyzed the potential cause of the fire. The discussion primarily focused on two areas:
- Solid-State Relay (SSR)]: Many users identified the SSR, a component that controls power to the heated bed, as a likely point of failure. Cheap or improperly implemented SSRs are known to fail in a "stuck-on" state, leading to uncontrolled heating.
- Lack of Hardware Redundancy: A key finding was the apparent absence of a simple, inexpensive safety component: a Thermal fuse. This hardware device would physically cut power to the heater if a critical temperature is exceeded, acting as a failsafe against software or SSR failure and preventing a "thermal runaway" scenario. This omission was widely considered a significant design flaw.
