Viber (officially Rakuten Viber) is a cross-platform instant messaging (IM) and voice-over-IP (VoIP) service owned by the Japanese technology conglomerate Rakuten Group, Inc., commonly known as Rakuten. It was originally launched in 2010 by Israeli entrepreneurs Talmon Marco and Igor Magazinnik through the Cyprus-based company Viber Media (viber.com)[1]. In 2014, Rakuten, then ranked as the world’s sixth-largest e-commerce company, acquired Viber, integrating it into its expanding digital services portfolio.[2][3]
