The NZ coalition government has been pushing for surveillance of every vehicle in the country. With no opt out manual option this will record the location and movements of everyone who drives and damage classic cars by fixing devices into their dashboards and wiring looms. The status quo system could be extended to all vehicles just as it was extended from diesels to EVs last year. However the government is intending to remove the option to do things as they're done now forcing every vehicle to have a device installed or be non compliant and subject to fines or criminal charges along the lines of fraud or theft.

All vehicles get a 24/7 GPS

The New Zealand Coalition Government is pushing for GPS signals 24/7 for all vehicles in the country, meaning that people in NZ may feel less secure with the GPS always tracking them. This will also damage classic cars, adding a new device to them. If the NZ Coalition Government get away with this, it means they could get away with other things as well, making NZ a more corrupt country.

Consumer response

Some people have voiced their concerns on Change’s website. Someone said that:

It is completely unnecessary to have surveillance cameras or transponders for RUC's. Make an easy to use App where we can top up by amounts as small as $10 if we so desire. Just make it easy to pay, and easy to check how many kms we have remaining. And if you're behind, you don't get given a WOF until they've been paid.
