Sengled is a Chinese[1] smart-lighting manufacturer that focuses on affordable smart light bulbs to consumers that are compatible with Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant.
Consumer impact summary[edit | edit source]
Always online: Their products rely on proprietary cloud services. This means that should something render the product unable to access the server(s), the consumer cannot use features — such as voice activation and smart home automation — or even so far as to be left with essentially electronic waste.
Requires downloading app: Sengled engages in the practice of forced app download, whereby a business requires the consumer to use its own application software in order to use a product.
Change without notice: "We reserve the right at any time to modify or discontinue the Services (or any part or content thereof) without notice at any time."[2]
Additional costs may apply: "You acknowledge and understand that certain Services may be provided for a fee. In that case, you shall pay all applicable fees in connection with the Services selected by you in accordance with the Sales Terms.[2]
Sharing performance/function evaluations of services with third-parties: "You may not release the results of any performance or functional evaluation of any of the Services to any third party without prior written approval of Sengled for each such release."[2]
Arbitration: It is unknown whether Sengled uses forced arbitration for resolving disputes, as there is no dispute resolution policy displayed on its website(s).
Incidents[edit | edit source]
Removed from Alexa (July 2025)[edit | edit source]
As of 31 July 2025, Sengled's app is no longer available on Alexa. Amazon cited its removal as being due to repeated sporadic outages the preceding few months that had remained unresolved by Sengled. Although some smart light bulbs may be able to use Alexa directly through other means such as Zigbee and Bluetooth, for the most part customers that relied on Alexa-compatibility have been left with bricked goods.[3]
There still has been no statement from Sengled on the matter as of 26 August 2025. Despite the removal, its Amazon store page[4] and both their EU and US websites still advertise compatibility with Alexa.[5][6]
App itself becomes inoperable (Aug 2025)[edit | edit source]
The Sengled app has stopped working since 2 August 2025, leaving customers with non-functioning smart light bulbs.[citation needed] Again, no statement was released by Sengled as of 26 August 2025.
