Minecraft Chat Reporting and Restriction

Ever since the release of Minecraft version 1.19.1 in July 2022, Minecraft players can be reported for their chat messages and can be permanently banned from joining any multiplayer servers. Additionally, in Febuary 2026, chat is restricted by default in the UK to comply with the UK Online Safety Act.

Background

Minecraft is a block-based multiplayer sandbox game made by Mojang Studios. The game received criticism following Mojang's acquisition by Microsoft.

Chat restrictions

Chat restriction and reporting

A mechanism for chat restriction was implemented in 1.16.3 for use in parental controls.[2] However, since the "user flags" are connected to the player's Microsoft account, Microsoft can alter them under its own discretion, without the user's (or the user's parents' if parental control is enabled) consent.

Introduced in Minecraft version 1.19.1, users can be reported for inappropriate chat messages.[3] When a player is reported, they could be temporarily or permanently banned from all multiplayer gameplay, including private servers and local area network (LAN) games. On official Minecraft Realms servers, chat messages are automatically scanned and player can be banned even if their massages haven't been reported by anyone else.[4]

Age verification in the UK

In January 2026, Microsoft announced that in February 2026, Minecraft from UK region are blocked from chatting (Java Edition) or restricted to friend-only chat (Pocket Edition, Xbox and Bedrock Edition) unless the client's Xbox account is age-verified. Microsoft is planning to expand the restriction to other regions.[citation needed]

Consumer response

The restrictions are implemented on the Minecraft client rather than the server, so there are user-generated mods to bypass these restrictions.

No Chat Reports

This mod removes cryptographic signatures from chat messages, making them unreportable. It also disables telemetry.[5]

SecureChat

This mod adds encryption to your chat messages.[6]

No Chat Restrictions

This work-in-progress mod removes the restrictions around the use of multiplayer features, in particular in-game chat.[7]
