Honda requires connection of the car to the internet and creating an account to be able to download offline map updates.

Background

Honda sells some versions of their vehicles with infotainment systems which include navigation maps. It has a database of users' contact information, emails, VIN numbers and other vehicle attributes. It periodically provides updates for the navigation database for vehicle owners to download.

Car Internet connectivity

Before Honda allows you to download of offline updates to a USB drive and install the updates in the car, the vehicle first needs to be connected to the internet, and an account has to be created to associate the vehicle with the account.[1]

This is unnecessary, since the download of the maps is authorized by the VIN of the car and the current version of the maps database.[citation needed]

Honda already has this information, which is confirmed by the email notifications to owners, stating that there is an available update, and included in that email is the VIN of the vehicle.[citation needed]

Honda's response

The HERE Technologies Customer Service Team providing support for Honda for the webpage where the download are available, responded with: "We do apologize for the difficulties of this update. If you are not signed-in to Online Services, your VIN will not be found."
