On September 21, 2025, Kwikset e-mailed customers to announce their intent to shut down the Kevo app and web portal on November 14, 2025.

The e-mail gave people who rely on Kwikset smart locks just under two months before their smart lock would no longer open to an authorized user, unless that user happened to be carrying a backup key or hardware key fob. If there was a situation where a user does not visit a property secured with a Kwikset Kevo smart lock with a frequency that overlaps this short grace period, that user would find themselves locked out of their property with no way to get back in without defeating the lock.

There is no mention of any type of refund of the lock purchase price or "lifetime" eKey in app purchases.

Kwikset, the brand behind the Kevo smart lock, is not going out of business, and they are offering new smart locks with the Kwikset brand to replace the smart locks they are shutting down.

Background

Kwikset Kevo locks were sold as a smart lock with touch-to-open functionality which used Bluetooth and a mobile phone app for Apple and Android devices. The implication with these smart locks was that you were buying from a reputable home lock brand, Kwikset, and should expect a lifetime of support. Initially, additional "eKeys" were once made available to "purchase" via in app purchase for $1.99 per additional virtual key, however this was soon made available for free to Kevo smart lock owners.

Service Discontinuation

On September 21, 2025, Kwikset sent this e-mail to Kevo customers:

Kwikset's response

Kwikset maintains that the lock will continue to work with physical keys and "key fobs".[2] The key fobs in question are small plastic devices that somewhat resemble tracker tags and fit on a key ring. However, these fobs always performed poorly, had very short battery life with an oddball CR2025 battery, and did not offer touch-to-unlock with the device in your pocket due to poor reception, and are not a practical substitute for the mobile app. The key fobs are not available for purchase, nor are repair parts for Kevo locks, and the locks were completely pulled from the market in anticipation of this shutdown.

There is nothing to suggest that users who take the discount offer for a new Kwikset smart lock won't be subjected to the same type of shutdown in the future for their new Kwikset smart lock.

Unikey's response

Before the November 14 deadline, Unikey, the vendor responsible for operating the Kevo servers and mobile app, announced independently of Kwikset/ASSA ABLOY that the service would continue to operate, and that a $1/month subscription would help them cover costs but would not be compulsory.

Consumer response

Full email

In apparent response to consumer backlash, Kwikset's tech vendor, Unikey's response to one Reddit user was to offer continued service for $12 a year[3]. It remains to be seen if this option will materialize.

Kevo customers should have already received an email from unikey informing them that they will continue to offer the basic app for free to all users so they can use local Bluetooth control after Kwikset drops support however if you wish to use their cloud services with your gateway device you will need to subscribe to their services for $12USD per year to maintain their cloud services, as well to support their company to keep them supporting this platform that the manufacturer is no longer supporting.

you can also subscribe on the mykevo site.

They did not however offer any way to access the gateway locally or provide any sort of API to free the device from their cloud cloud control.
