The CEO of FreePhoneLine , owned and run by Fongo, sponsored by DELL, has decided to change the terms of service of their "LIFETIME VoIP" license, taking it away from the people who purchased it and replacing it with a monthly subscription model.

Background

In the second half of 2024, FreePhoneLine started sending out emails stating that they are changing the terms of sale, revoking everyone's Lifetime License and replacing it with a monthly subscription model.

Backlash ensued, since people paid in excess of $100 for these "Lifetime" licenses. Additionally, the original terms of service already included a 911 pay-per-use fee of $34 every time it was called whether an emergency or not.

[Incident]

The company has a history of changing their terms of sale after purchase. Sometime around June of 2021, they changed their terms of sale to prevent connections to PBX systems for personal and commercial use. And any commercial use period.

Around June of 2024 they started sending out emails, changing the terms of sale and revoking everyone's Lifetime License in exchange for a monthly subscription model, which they blamed on increasing 911 costs even though they were already charging a pay-per-use fee for 911 calls.
