ice cream machine exclusivity repair rights
The Taylor C602 is the primary ice cream machine used at McDonald's to make soft serve dishes and shakes. It is infamously unreliable; there are memes about these machines and a website to view the status of each McDonald's ice cream machine around the world.
from wired article:
The Taylor C602 is an old but sophisticated machine with many self-checks during its regular two-week cleanings, nightly pasteurization, and other stages. But once something goes wrong, the machine often refuses to work and gives undocumented error codes. Often, these can only be interpreted by a Taylor repair associate visiting the McDonald's franchise.
An entrepreneurial couple, Nelson and O'Sullivan attempted to automate the upkeep of a Taylor machine to run a frozen yogurt vending machine business. With Taylor's blessing, they went to Shenzhen and began creating an automated enclosure and started learning more about how Taylor machines work. After much hard work and prototyping, they discovered time and time again that the Taylor machines were just simply unreliable and could not be operated without manual intervention.
Eventually they used their reverse engineering findings to change courses and launch Kytch, a Raspberry Pi-based system that helps food retailers monitor and diagnose their Taylor machines. Data that is typically hidden away is now easily readable, loggable, and owners can receive status updates on their machines. However, at this point, Nelson and O'Sullivan's cordial relationship with Taylor ends, as Taylor covertly attempts to purchase Kytch devices.
Later Taylor launches their
