E-bike components

[edit | edit source]

Customers with Shimano motors including the EP6 and EP801 are restricted from connecting electrical equipment such as lights to their e-bikes. Special software and hardware primarily used by bike shops is required to activate ports or accept new devices. What used to be a click on an app is now a trip to a bike shop or paying hundreds for diagnostic equipment.[2]

Faulty cranksets

Some cranksets produced by Shimano have defects making them prone to breaking and injuring bicyclists. During March 2026, Shimano agreed to pay a $11.5 million civil penalty for failing to immediately report cranksets that posed a crash hazard.[3]
