User:Louis/Google Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program eligibility reversal

From Consumer Rights Wiki

In early January 2026, Google declared a UK Pixel 4a owner's device "Not Eligible" under the Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program. The same IMEI had passed Google's eligibility check months earlier. The reversal came shortly after the owner had self-repaired the phone with a genuine iFixit battery.[1]

The worst of it

[edit | edit source]
  • Google enforced a self-repair penalty that does not appear on the public program page. Google's support reply cited a clause stating that "repairs or modifications completed outside of the authorised program process, including third-party or self-performed repairs, may impact eligibility under the program terms." That clause is not on the public program page at https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/15701861. The link Google appended in the same email pointed back to that same public page.[1][2]
  • Google reversed an eligibility decision it had already given. The customer passed the program's IMEI eligibility check months earlier and saw the three appeasement options. When he returned before the January 8, 2026 deadline to claim the $50 USD payment, the IMEI checker no longer let him past validation, and Google told him the device was ineligible.[1]
  • Google refused to explain why. Google's support told the customer that "individual eligibility factors cannot be disclosed," and that "these determinations are handled using internal criteria defined under the program."[1]
  • The authorised repair route was unworkable. Google's UK authorised centres told the customer they would wipe the device as a matter of policy and could not confirm the make or manufacturer of the replacement battery they would install. He bought a genuine iFixit battery, which cost him more than the $50 USD Google was offering, and fitted it himself.[1]
  • Google blamed the degradation on battery aging. Google's first denial attributed the customer's symptoms to "the normal aging of your device's rechargeable battery," even though the customer reported the runtime collapse began immediately after Google's January 2025 software update. That update is the same update the Battery Performance Program existed to remediate.[1]

The rest of this page reproduces the correspondence in full so the reader can verify the above directly. The customer's identifiers ([name], [email address], two [IMEI] numbers, and [Google Case ID]) are redacted at the customer's request. Google's wording, the support agent's first name (Rachel), and all dates are reproduced verbatim.[1]

Background

[edit | edit source]

The Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program was Google's response to a January 8, 2025 Android 13 software update that, in Google's own words, "will reduce your battery's runtime and charging performance" on certain Pixel 4a devices that Google labelled "Impacted Devices."[3][2] The program offered eligible owners a free battery replacement, a $100 USD Google Store credit, or a $50 USD payment; the registration window ran one year from January 8, 2025 and closed on January 8, 2026.[2] The mainspace article Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program covers the program at length; this page is only the case study.

Google's January 6, 2025 notice email

[edit | edit source]

On January 6, 2025, Google sent the customer an automated notice from [email protected] previewing the update that became the basis of the program:[3]

Hi [Customer]

We wanted to let you know about an upcoming software update for your Pixel 4a that will affect the overall performance and stability of its battery. Pixel phones, like other smartphones, use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that, over time, may experience performance, capacity or runtime degradation.

In the coming days, your Pixel 4a will receive an automatic software update to Android 13 that introduces new battery management features to improve the stability of your device. This update will reduce your battery's runtime and charging performance.

To address this, we're providing some options to consider. Please take a look and choose which one works best for you.

More details related to this change are available here. Eligibility criteria and other terms will apply.

Thank you,

Pixel team[3]

The customer's account

[edit | edit source]

The customer is a UK Pixel 4a owner who purchased the device from Carphone Warehouse. He summarised his experience to Louis Rossmann on May 31, 2026 before forwarding the correspondence:[1]

Just sharing this since you covered the program previously and thought you'd be interested hearing my experience.

TL;DR...

  • I have a pixel 4a and was sent the email for the appeasement program after google's battery update killed the phones working time
  • I made enquiries with their approved repair centres for a battery replacement but decided against sending it off
  • I ordered a genuine battery from iFixit (which cost more than the amount they offered under the appeasement program) and repaired it myself
  • I went to claim my $50usd appeasement before the deadline
  • google changed their mind and said I was no longer eligible

Admittedly I can survive without the 50 dollars but the scummy-ness of the affair and their backtracking left a sour taste.

I keep this phone going as it's the last handset (I believe) that google offered unlimited cloud storage on for photos which is handy for my work. I'll probably purchase a fairphone when this handset finally dies.

I trust you to do this regardless but please censor my details if you make a video.[1]

Correspondence with Google Support, December 2025 to January 2026

The thread below is reproduced in full from the customer's forwarded Google Support exchange (Case ID redacted). Each message is dated as it appeared in the thread headers. Square-bracketed substitutions mark redactions ([Customer] for the customer's name, [redacted] for IMEI numbers and case identifiers); all other wording is verbatim, including Google's spelling and punctuation.

Initial Google Support reply, December 25, 2025

[edit | edit source]

The customer's opening request to Google's device-support channel preceded this reply; that opening message is not retained in the forwarded thread. Google support agent Rachel replied from [email protected] at 10:12 on December 25, 2025:[1]

Customer's response, January 1, 2026

[edit | edit source]

The customer replied at 13:37 on January 1, 2026, after an aborted partial send he refers to in his apology:[1]

Hi Rachel,

(Apologies, I accidentally sent the previous email before I had finished writing it. Below is the complete information)

The answer to those questions is as follows: 1. Please describe what you experienced with your Pixel. Reduced battery runtime after google deployed a software update. 2. Which Pixel model did this occur with? Google Pixel 4a 3. What's your Pixel's IMEI number? [redacted] / [redacted] 4. What country did you purchase your device in? UK 5. Was your device purchased from the Google Store or another retailer? Carphone Warehouse 6. What model/brand of charger do you normally use to charge the device? Original google branded charger

Google started an appeasement program and issued a link that I was previously able to use to view the available options. However, when I now try to use it to finalise my choice, it no longer gets past the IMEI confirmation step (screenshot attached).

The appeasement program is supposed to be valid from 8 January 2025 to 8 January 2026, as per the terms and conditions, so it's unclear why the site is not working today. I have already purchased a replacement battery and would like to claim the USD $50 payment.

Proof of purchase for the phone is attached, along with proof of purchase for the replacement battery (not requested, but included for completeness).

As the google appeasement site is currently not working can you please process my selection and issue me the USD $50 payment thanks.

kind regards,

[Customer][1]

Google's first denial, January 2, 2026 (05:10)

[edit | edit source]

Rachel replied at 05:10 on January 2, 2026:[1]

Hi [Customer],

Thank you for contacting Google support regarding the Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program.

We appreciate your patience as we reviewed your eligibility for the program. After careful review of your submission, your device has been determined ineligible for a support option, as it is not among the specific devices identified as "Impacted Devices" for this program.

The Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program is specifically for users of certain Pixel 4a phones that require a software update which, for "Impacted Devices," reduces battery capacity and impacts charging performance when the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. Not all Pixel 4a devices were impacted by the reduction in battery capacity and charging performance as a result of the battery health features included in this update.

Therefore, if your device is not impacted, you are not eligible for a support option under this program.

It is possible that the diminished battery performance you are experiencing is related to the normal aging of your device's rechargeable battery. Pixel phones, like other smartphones, use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries which are consumable components that can experience performance, capacity, or runtime degradation over time.

If you are experiencing decreased battery performance not related to the specific issue addressed by this program, we recommend general troubleshooting or considering replacing your battery if you notice a decrease in capacity or runtime due to aging. You can find information and support for general battery issues on our Help Center or by contacting our support team through our standard channels.

Thank you for your continued support and for being a valued member of the Pixel family.

Thanks!

Rachel

Customer's pushback, January 2, 2026 (06:44)

[edit | edit source]

The customer responded the same day at 06:44:[1]

Hi Rachel,

Thank you for the quick response. However, I am somewhat perplexed by this conclusion, as my handset was previously deemed eligible for the program, as mentioned in my prior email.

When I checked eligibility several months ago, I was able to successfully pass the IMEI validation step and view the available support options. At that time, I initially considered the certified repair option, but after further investigation, I decided not to proceed, as Google's authorised repair route appeared to be limited to EE repair centres which:

1. have a policy of wiping the device, and 2. were unable to confirm the model or manufacturer of the replacement battery being used.

As a result, I chose instead to purchase a genuine replacement battery directly from iFixit as evidenced from the invoice included in my last email.

Following that, I do not understand how the same handset, which previously passed eligibility checks and was clearly affected following the relevant software update, is now being deemed ineligible, particularly when the program is nearing its end.

Could you please explain:

* why my device was previously eligible but is no longer considered an "impacted device", and * whether there has been a change to the eligibility criteria or to the status of my specific IMEI?

From my experience, the battery degradation occurred immediately following the rollout of the update referenced by this program, rather than as a result of normal battery aging. I would appreciate clarification on this discrepancy, as the current determination does not align with my earlier eligibility check or with the behaviour of the device after the update.

kind regards,

[Customer][1]

Google's final reply, January 2, 2026 (12:58)

[edit | edit source]

Google's last message in the thread arrived at 12:58 on January 2, 2026:[1]

Hi [Customer],

Thank you for contacting Google support and your detailed message and for explaining your experience. We understand why this situation feels confusing and I appreciate the time you've taken to outline the background.

After the review, your device has been determined to be Not Eligible under the Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program. We understand that you previously passed an initial IMEI validation check and saw available support options, however, passing that early validation does not guarantee eligibility after a full review is completed in accordance with the program policy.

We'd like to clarify that eligibility under the program is determined based on a review completed at the time of submission and in accordance with the current program policy. While a device may have previously passed an initial IMEI validation or displayed available options during an earlier check, this does not guarantee eligibility at a later stage or after a full review is completed. Eligibility status can change based on updated assessments, program criteria, or the outcome of internal verification tied to the specific IMEI.

At this time, we're unable to provide detailed explanations regarding:

* Why a device that previously appeared eligible is later deemed ineligible, or * Whether there have been internal changes related to a specific IMEI

These determinations are handled using internal criteria defined under the program, and individual eligibility factors cannot be disclosed.

Please also note that repairs or modifications completed outside of the authorised program process, including third-party or self-performed repairs, may impact eligibility under the program terms.

For more details you may visit: Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program

Thank you for your continued support and for being a valued member of the Pixel family.

Kind regards, Rachel

Google Support Team[1]

The self-repair clause in Google's final message was not present on Google's public program page at https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/15701861 as of the program's January 7, 2025 archived snapshot, & the link Google appended in the same email pointed back to that same public page, which itself contained no self-repair clause.[2][1]

Embedded program-terms & eligibility-checker screenshots

[edit | edit source]

The customer attached three screenshots to his forwarded thread: an excerpt of Google's official program-terms page, the January 6, 2025 notice email reproduced above, & the eligibility-checker error he hit when he returned to the registration page.[1]

The program-terms excerpt, captured from Google's support page:[1][2]

Free-of-charge battery replacement and other options for individual end-user owners of Impacted Devices

If your Pixel 4a is an Impacted Device, you may be eligible for a free-of-charge battery replacement. You can visit our registration page to find a battery replacement option near you.

Battery replacement is available at walk-in repair centres in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, India, Australia and France. Mail-in repair is also available for customers in the United States. Battery replacement is only available in eligible locations and while battery supplies last. For more details about eligibility, review the criteria here.

If battery replacement is not convenient or you would like to explore other options, you can also visit our registration page to claim one of the other appeasement options:

* $100 USD (converted to your local currency or local equivalent) Google hardware discount code applicable towards the purchase of another Pixel phone on the Google Store (as available).

Note: Carefully select your appeasement option as after you choose, you can't change it.

You may have statutory rights available to you under the laws of the country where you purchased the device. If available to you, you may alternatively make a claim pursuant to those.

Terms and Conditions

Individual end users will have one year from the initial software release on 8 January 2025 to register and make a choice of one of the three appeasement options, which may vary by [...] and Google hardware discount code amounts may vary based on the daily exchange rate at the time of conversion. The final amount will be calculated using the exchange rate in effect at the time that you select your appeasement option.[1]

The eligibility-checker error that blocked the customer from finalising his $50 USD selection:[1]

Determine if your device qualifies for the Pixel 4a Battery Performance Programme

If your Pixel 4a is eligible for the Pixel 4a Battery Performance Programme, then you may be eligible for a repair at no cost to you, a cash payment or a Google Store hardware discount credit.

We could not complete your request

We couldn't complete your request. This may be because the IMEI is invalid or the device is not an eligible Pixel 4a. Please re-enter the 15-[digit IMEI], ensure that your device is a Pixel 4a and then restart the workflow.[1]

Independent reporting

[edit | edit source]

The 2025 reporting on the Pixel 4a program documented broader friction with the compensation mechanics but did not surface the specific self-repair eligibility-reversal pattern recorded above:

  • The Washington, D.C. firm Migliaccio & Rathod LLP opened a public investigation of the program on April 7, 2025, focused on Payoneer fees on the $50 USD route and on the program's rule against switching compensation forms once chosen.[4]
  • PhoneArena (January 24, 2025) reported a separate authorised-route complaint, quoting one owner who said "they wouldn't give me the free battery without charging me $90 to replace the screen."[5]
  • Slashdot (January 31, 2025) aggregated technical analysis showing the update reduced charging voltage from 4.44 V to 3.95 V on affected battery profiles and cut usable capacity from 3,080 mAh to 1,539 mAh.[6]
