Google Nest Thermostat (1st and 2nd Generation) Support Discontinuation

From Consumer Rights Wiki

Google has announced the discontinuation of support for first and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats[1]. According to Google's announcement, the following devices will lose smart functionality and app connectivity:

  • Nest Learning Thermostat (1st generation, 2011)[1]
  • Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd generation, 2012)[1]
  • Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd generation, Europe version, 2014)[1]

Service Discontinuation[edit | edit source]

Starting from October 25, 2025, Google states that affected thermostats will[1]:

  • Be unpaired and removed from Nest and Home apps
  • Lose remote control capabilities
  • Stop receiving notifications
  • Lose phone or tablet control
  • Disconnect from third-party assistants
  • Lose connected features like Home/Away Assist
  • No longer receive software or security updates

Google notes that "you may experience an unpredictable decline in performance if you attempt to use it continuously"[1].

Safety Feature Impact[edit | edit source]

The discontinuation will affect the Emergency Shutoff feature, which automatically shuts off heating systems when Nest Protect detects carbon monoxide[2]. According to Google's documentation, this feature requires:

  • An active account in the Nest app
  • Both a Nest Protect and Nest Learning Thermostat
  • Working internet and Wi-Fi connection to both devices[2]

Google specifically states that "Nest Protects will also disconnect from the thermostat and Emergency Shut-off will no longer run"[1].

Google's response[edit | edit source]

According to Google, the following will continue to work directly on the device[1]:

  • Pre-set schedules
  • Auto-Schedule settings management
  • Temperature mode switching
  • All features and settings available on the thermostat itself

Lawsuit[edit | edit source]

No lawsuits have been filed at this time.

Consumer response[edit | edit source]

Consumers affected by this discontinuation may wish to:

  • Save all communications from Google/Nest regarding the discontinuation
  • Document current device functionality and integrations, particularly safety features
  • Consider filing complaints with consumer protection agencies if appropriate
  • Ensure alternative carbon monoxide safety measures are in place before October 25, 2025[1]
