Notice: This Article's Relevance Is Under Review

This article has been flagged for questionable relevance. Its connection to the systemic consumer protection issues outlined in the Mission statement and Moderator Guidelines isn't clear. Articles that focus on isolated incidents, personal disputes, or local matters may not meet the inclusion criteria for the Consumer Action Taskforce Wiki.

Why This Article Is In Question

Articles in this wiki have to meet the following criteria:

  • Systemic Nature: Demonstrate a broader pattern of systemic abuse, negligence, or policies that align with modern consumer exploitation (e.g., ownership revocation, barriers to repair, privacy violations, changing the terms of the sale after the sale).
  • Relevance: Relate to consumer protection issues that extend beyond individual grievances or localized problems.
  • Evidence: Provide verifiable evidence or credible sources to support the author's claims and demonstrate systemic impact.

Examples of articles that do not meet these criteria:

  • A single negative customer experience; with no evidence of systemic issues or company policies enabling such behavior.
  • Localized disputes, such as a bad experience with a contractor or small business, better suited for platforms like Yelp or local consumer protection agencies.
  • Complaints that focus on personal dissatisfaction (e.g., "I waited too long for a response") without tying the issue to broader consumer exploitation themes.
How You Can Improve This Article

To justify the relevance of this article:

  • Provide evidence demonstrating how the issue reflects broader consumer exploitation (e.g., systemic patterns, recurring incidents, or related company policies).
  • Link the problem to modern forms of consumer protection concerns, such as privacy violations, barriers to repair, or ownership rights.
  • Add credible sources or documentation that substantiate claims and connect them to systemic practices. i.e:
    • A company that takes 5 days too long to refund a deposit is a bad Yelp review. Not eligible for inclusion.
    • A company with 500,000 active repairs at any given time that purposely delays all deposit refunds for a period of five days, in order to invest/gamble with these deposits on their balance sheet, with verifiable hard proof from internal communications that this was an intentional & standard practice performed with malicious intent is eligible for inclusion.

Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution is a platform video game developed and published by WayForward. What is being discussed here is the physical gameboy advance physical release which is produced by retro-bit and published by limited run games. This is a 3rd party cartridge for the gameboy advanced produced by retro-bit due to the fact the official gba cartridges are no longer in production. This was marketed and sold as a limited release collector grade item and was charged an msrp that started from 59.99 usd, a price tag usually reserved for triple a releases.

Shantae Advance - Risky Revolution!
Basic Information
Release Year April 2025
Product Type Hardware, gameboy advance 3rd party cartridge
In Production Yes

Consumer impact summary edit

The product that was marketed as a premium, collector grade item was shipped without any sufficient protection which resulted in customers obtaining damaged goods. (I cannot find the post where someone complained, hence I'm providing a previous damaged collectors edition as a source.)

The cartridges themselves utilized recycled parts of what were flashcarts which retro-bit also sold on their website. Customers described them as containing,"bootleg mod chips". This was first denied by the company but then they later partially confessed to it and then justified their actions. These products have a worse cosmetic condition than cheaper flashcards one can obtain from Aliexpress.

Many users have been suffering from issues with these cartridges. Most notably, save data is deleting itself, sound is coming out distorted, the game crashing and in some incidents, the cartridge doesn't work. Customers cannot return and replace damaged goods easily due to the publisher, limited run games making it very difficult to do so. Customer service does their best to pin the blame on the customer and refuse returns and refunds. In the instances they do agree, in case of a refund its partial. In case of a replacement, they require the customer to ship it at their own expense.

The terrible cosmetic condition of the product has sparked concern over its safety. Due to lrg's products having a history of killing consoles due to voltage issues, there is a concern that this cartridge is harmful for customer's gameboy advance's, ds's, analogue pocket's and other products capable of running gameboy advance cartridges. 2 previous products could kill the nes.

The game will not load on the analogue product properly despite marketing showcasing compatibility. https://www.reddit.com/r/AnaloguePocket/comments/1ka06mf/shantae_advance_incompatible/

Due to the company cheaping out on quality, the rom will not save properly on emulators, "Weird, this dump worked fine for me on the EZ Flash Omega DE without issue, saves and all. I noticed there were issues for some people on emulators, apparently that's because they cheaped out on the type of cartridge they used. It was designed to save in one way, but they used a rom hack to make it save in another way to produce cheaper cartridges. There's already a patch on GBATemp to fix that though.". https://www.reddit.com/r/GameboyAdvance/comments/1kal5vh/finally_got_my_copy_of_shantae_advance_risky/

The game keeps crashing while saving. https://www.reddit.com/r/Shantae/comments/1kbgobl/bug_issues_or_maybe_my_gameboy/
