SteelSeries
SteelSeries is a Danish manufacturer of gaming peripherals and accessories, including headsets, keyboards, mice, controllers, and mousepads.
Incidents[edit | edit source]
Many SteelSeries gaming headsets feature "Chatmix", a physical dial that allows the user to easily adjust the balance between game audio and voice chat. Headsets with the Chatmix feature traditionally presented their game and chat channels to the computer as two separate devices, allowing the user to assign the channels directly in the operating system and the audio chat software respectively.
Starting with the Arctis 7+ headset, Chatmix channels can only be configured by using SteelSeries GG, the manufacturer's proprietary software. The module of the software required for the Chatmix dial on the headset to work, is only accessible if the user is logged into a SteelSeries account.[1] This has the following consequences for users of modern SteelSeries headsets:
- Users are required to create and log into an online account in order to use a hardware feature of their product.
- The feature can only be used on computers running Windows.
- The extra layer of required, unreliable software adds complexity, and often requires troubleshooting sound issues.
