The cameras of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 were artificially disabled in software after the user unlocked the phone's bootloader.[1][2]
Background
[edit | edit source]The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a foldable smartphone in Samsung's Galaxy Z series. On Samsung devices, unlocking the bootloader to install custom software trips the Knox security suite, voiding the warranty and permanently disabling features such as Samsung Pay.[1]
Camera disable on bootloader unlock
[edit | edit source]In August 2021, XDA Senior Members 白い熊 and ianmacd reported that the final confirmation screen shown during the bootloader unlock process on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 warns that the operation will cause the camera to be disabled.[1]
After booting with the bootloader unlocked, the stock camera application becomes unusable and all camera-related features stop working, which also prevents the use of facial recognition. Any function relying on the cameras either times out and throws errors or shows a black screen, including in third-party camera apps.[1][2] Commentators noted the restriction was unusual, observing that Sony had previously tied bootloader unlocking to loss of camera functionality on its own devices.[3]
Re-locking the bootloader makes the camera work again, indicating a software-level obstacle rather than hardware damage.[1]
Samsung's response
[edit | edit source]Samsung addressed the issue in the second One UI 4 beta release for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 (firmware version ZUKA), after which all camera functions continued to work following a bootloader unlock. The fix only applied to certain regional variants of the device (model numbers F926B and F926N).[4]
Consumer response
[edit | edit source]Coverage of the restriction was critical of Samsung. The Verge wrote that it was hard to see how turning off the cameras entirely was anything but a punishment for users who wanted to modify their phones, noting that disabling Knox-dependent features would have been more defensible on security grounds.[5] SamMobile reported that the discovery caused an outcry among users considering unlocking the bootloader, describing the camera disablement as a heavier penalty than the loss of Knox and Samsung Pay.[6]
