Aldi is a multinational and family-owned discount supermarket chain founded in Essen, Germany in 1948 by brothers Karl and Theodor Albrecht after taking over their mother's store.[1] Since 1962, the company has been split into two legally and financially separate parts: Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord, dividing international markets between themselves. In the United States, Aldi Süd operates under the name "Aldi," while Aldi Nord operates "Trader Joe's."[2]

[edit | edit source]Both Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord have made partnerships with computer vision companies in the past to experiment with "frictionless" shopping experiences to one degree or another.[3][4] Although customers have the choice of whether or not they use the technology at checkout, they can nonetheless expect to be monitored by it in stores where Aldi has had it configured.

Partnership with Trigo to use AI recognition technology (July 2022)
[edit | edit source]In 2022, Aldi Nord opened a 4,300-square-foot superstore in the Netherlands that featured checkout-free technology provided by the Israeli tech company Trigo.[3][4]
Partnership with Grabango to use AI recognition technology (April 2024)
[edit | edit source]In November 2023, Aldi partnered with automated-checkout technology startup Grabango to debut "ALDIgo," a "checkout-free" shopping experience in an Aurora, Illinois location.[4] Rather than check out at a conventional checkout counter with a cashier, participating customers would be monitored by computer vision technology mounted to the ceiling that also tracked the products they interacted with. Customers who used the system had to install a mobile app and could then scan out at a separate kiosk provided by Grabango.
Since Grabango failed to secure the funding necessary to stay in business in 2024, it is unknown whether the technology is still used in Aldi's Aurora, Illinois location, and to what extent (if it is used at all).[5]
