We're always looking for people willing to go the extra mile for consumer rights and help the Wiki be the best it can possibly be. This will serve as your guide to applying for either a moderator role or the superconfirmed role (don't worry, it's not too painful!).

Upon receiving an application, we will review it and aim to get back to you as quickly as possible. Applications should be sent to the email [email protected], and should contain an answer to any required questions, as well as your Wiki username and any other relevant information (other sites you've modded on, Wikipedia edits you've made, etc.) so we can examine your edit history.

Superconfirmed vs moderator

Superconfirmed users have a different set of permissions from full moderators; the important differences are below:

Superconfirmed

  • Can edit most protected pages
  • Can delete pages
  • Can remove article notices
  • Can undelete pages

Moderators

  • Have access to all superconfirmed permissions
  • Can ban users and IPs
  • Can protect pages

The overall intention is that most of our regular content editors should end up as Superconfirmed, whereas the moderator role is for those who want to go the extra mile.

Requirements

We want to strike a balance between sensible caution over the handing out of privileges, and the need to make the application process accessible and relatively pain-free (we certainly don't want to end up with Wikipedia's situation, where the strictness of their system has essentially served to block them from recruiting new moderators). As such, here's an overview of what we're looking for in an applicant:

Edit history

Your edit history needs to demonstrate that you have an understanding of what the Wiki's purpose is, and what makes a good article. We will mostly look at your most recent substantial edits, and assess how well they fit with the Wiki's policies and guidelines.

For the Superconfirmed role, you must have a month of activity on the wiki, and for the moderator role you must have 3 months' activity (in both cases wiki activity does not need to be contiguous, and experience on external wikis counts, provided that the wiki in question has a similar style of content policies.

Application questions (Moderator applications only)

  • Why are you interested in moderating the Wiki?
  • What do you see as the biggest non-technical problem with the Wiki or its articles at present?
  • What is your time availability for the role, and what tasks are you most interested in carrying out as a mod?
  • Have you read through the Wiki's policy documentation, and do you have any particular thoughts or comments on it?

Removal of moderator positions

Moderators may have their permissions revoked under certain conditions:

Community consensus

If there is consensus among the active members of the wiki community that a mod is consistently misusing their privileges, either intentionally or unintentionally, then that moderator may have their privileges removed following the resolution of a request for comment.

A mod whose permissions were revoked due to community consensus may only have their privileges returned if the position of community consensus changes over time, and is confirmed by another request for comment.

Inactivity

To mitigate the impacts of accidental credential loss, it is best practice to minimise the number of inactive privileged users on the wiki. To this effect, any moderator with no recorded activity in over 9 months will have their permissions removed.

Moderators who have had their permissions revoked for this reason may regain them on request, provided that they intend to actively participate on the wiki.

Abuse

Abuse is differentiated from misuse by intent and severity, and may include such behaviours as: - Banning a legitimate user to win an argument - Suppressing edits in order to misrepresent another user - Bullying or harassment of wiki users

In such cases a moderator will, at a minimum, have their permissions rapidly removed after an internal staff consultation.
