Alleged selling of extended warranties with little to no Value (2011-2023)

In 2025, a class action was brought against JB Hi-Fi alleging that they sold extended warranties to consumers, which had little to no value over what the Australian Consumer Law already provides. These extended warranties, handled by third party companies such as Assurant and SquareTrade (Allstate) were advertised to allow for warranty repairs and/or replacements after the manufacturer warranty had expired. However, consumer protections for faulty products are comparatively strong in Australian, and under Australian Consumer Law, a product has to be repaired or replaced by the retailer within a reasonable time-frame. This means that that a faulty device with a one year manufacturer's warranty can generally still be replaced or repaired under Australian Consumer Law after the warranty period has expired, making the extended warranty service effectively useless

The lawsuit is scheduled to begin on the 5th of October 2026, and therefore the situation is ongoing.
